Well, my muffler has decided to pack it in and I am kind of shocked at the prices for a new one. I found this at Northern:

http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200381957_200381957

Has anyone used one of these. There is a review from someone who says the used it to replace a muffler on another brand of generator on a motorhome that would have cost 400.00 to buy a new one. Sounds like what I am looking at. My problem is that my pipe to muffler has to be replaced also and this kit has one in it.
Just wondering.

I thought about trying to adapt a muffler off an MG but the inlet is a straight through design instead of a side inlet. Plus it would probably leak oil.

If I recall correctly, someone posted awhile back that they found one at Tractor Supply that worked and it was from an IH 20 tractor.

Don,
That is a good choice and might work well.

You can make the down-pipe out of a piece of 1 1/4" electrical conduit.
You might want to look at these units.

Gene Berry a GMC Western States members son makes these

From Jim K.

Dan Stucky Sells an SS replacement muffler at a reasonable price Dan
also has the down pipe from the manifold to the muffler in SS.

Don, I went through a similar exercise some years ago... see
http://teamteets.com/gmc/onan.html The NAPA muffler number is still good,
but the $49 is now $61. It did turn out louder than I had wished.

If the northern tool option works, it would probably be less overall cost.

Don,

As I read the Northern ad, you'd be running the Onan's exhaust gases through
that muffler backward. I don't know that it matters, but it does say
"bottom outlet".

A couple of years ago when I installed my TroyBilt generator I had to devise
a muffler arrangement. I went to the muffler/tire shop down the street and
told the young owner sort of what I wanted. He got on the phone to his
supplier and they agreed to send an "Onan muffler" for me to examine. It
turned out to be just the ticket. It looked to me, with no old one to
compare it to, just like the one on my long-gone Onan.

Sorry I don't know even the brand, but if I found one here in S. GA that
easily, it shouldn't be too difficult closer to civilization.

I actually looked at your site and contacted NAPA about the muffler you used but not in stock. I know they order them but I thought I would check around. I was quoted about 60 bucks for it. It is still an option. Thanks!

You are correct sir! I did not notice that it was bottom outlet in all my excitement. I would like to know how much the stainless steel version is that Ken's sells in the CA.

I got one last year from Tom Hampton that is a complete assembly with the

I would try to use a generator muffler rather than the NAPA if I was doing
it again. The generator mufflers tend to be more baffled than a tractor
muffler. The NAPA option would be good if you are stuck and need something
quick and are near a large NAPA.

That is the problem, lots of small NAPA stores in the small towns around here.
