I suppose the question is one that has plagued folks for a long time. "How dumb was he?"
Let's say that on a trip to Oregon, your transmission started acting up. You had to use the shift lever to shift it into low and second.
Let's say that Manny could not get to you for a week.
Let's say that you tell your wife, "Don't worry, Baby, I'll get you to church family camp," when she suggested taking a tent.
Well, here is what can happen:

Tyler is my new hero. Oakhurst (mountains) to Manny's (super hill), 170 miles away: $600. Look at the trailer. It un-attaches where the flat meets the curved piece about under my front bumper. I backed it on and rolled it off. (It would not go forward but would back up.) Slick.

George,
Was that you I passed headed north near Gold Beach Oregon?
We were in our green Palm Beach with bikes on the back, headed south
toward the Napa store in Brookings.
We made it back to Chico with no turn signals.

George,
So sorry to hear you're having trouble. Great that you were able to get to
Manny though.
What happened with the transmission? Just decided to only go backward?

That was probably us. We were headed to the Steam-Up with the Cascaders. Great weekend. Fine, friendly group.

It began starting from stop lights in 3rd, but could be shifted down manually. Then it began to be slow shifting into 3rd.
About three miles from the church family camp, where the road gets really interesting, I shifted into low just to make it easier on the beast and there was sudden interference. We made it about another 50 yards and then the engine spun up but we stopped.

Thanks, George.
It'll be interesting to hear what the tear-down shows. Maybe you can get
Manny to let you know -- or participate.
Coming home from our last rally, I lost enough fluid to stop moving. A
couple of quarts of ATF got us home with no further problems. The whole
transmission was covered with fluid, but mostly on the right side. The pan
contained no debris but the fluid was a little darkened with friction
material dust. After washing everything down and a test drive, I now thing
either the input seal or the torque converter is leaking. Still waiting for
my back to get better (and Stick to get home to help) before R&R.
