Compounding my recent unemployment and reversal of fortune, today I discovered a rather aggressive oil leak in my 2004 VW Jetta TDI. Not willing to risk a temporary fix, we are being towed to the dealer in Bangor, ME for a new oil pan and whatever else they find damaged.
My only thought was: If I was only back in Americus, Georgia, with Ken's ramps and our mutual great welder/brazer, I wouldn't be out the $1000 deductible I'll have to pay.
Without tools and a pit and a welder, life can change in a big hurry. Only 1600 miles from home.

If you haven't had it fixed already, consider brake cleaner and JB Weld. My daughter did that to her oil pan about 4 years ago and it is still running down the road. I told her it would not work for long when she did it. That was about 4 years ago.

Thanks to all. Yes it is closer to 1400 miles than 1600, but you don't know my wife...or my GPS. I've just decided to bite the bullet and have the dealer replace the pan. The local garage guy offered the JB Weld solution, but right now, I'm out a pan. I don't want to be out an engine in case this thing fails.
I might opt out of the plastic pan replacement. Several companies offer aftermarket aluminum belly pans that would have protected better than the thin plastic OEM belly pan.
I thought we were OK with the comprehensive insurance, since this will run considerably more than my $250 deductible. Turns out that hitting an object in the road is collision and, naturally, old Stick opted for $1,000 deductible. Oh well.
The car is currently at the dealer in Bangor with repairs to commence on Monday. I should be back in GA by the end of the week.
Thanks again for all your offers to help. This is a great bunch.

An uncle had a Jag XK-150S with the world's thinnest oil pan and a mile of gravel driveway. We found out, a sheet metal screw with a rubber grommet on it sealed the holes nicely. When he sold the thing, the pan looked like it was sprouting mushrooms.

Hitting a shed tire tread in wife's Ford Explorer was termed comprehensive and
covered well. Same holds with hitting an animal, if I recall. Are you sure?

Before I submit any claim to my insurance company I call my agent first -
OK, may cost me $50 a year to have an agent, but, he will tell me exactly
how to "word" a claim to get the maximum reimbursement. I don't apply for
claims all that often, but when I do it is because I really need the
insurance company to live up to their end of the bargain.
Check your policy and see if it is not covered as some kind of unavoidable
road hazard.
As I mentioned before, I have 100% glass coverage with zero deductible.
This year I had the windshield replaced in one of my cars. The cost of
replacement is not what it used to be considering they now have antennas,
heads up displays etc. incorporated into them, So the extra $10 per year -
well worth it and the GMC is on the same policy. No deductible when it
comes time to have the glass replaced. I just hope when the time comes to
have a GMC windshield replaced it happens enroute to a GMC convention where
one of our fine vendors - just happens to have a new replacement with him.
Wouldn't that be luck! lol
Works for me.
PS - I have no association with any insurance company or agent other then
paying them the bucks every year to cover my...stuff...

Just a tip for you, and everyone who might have a similar problem with collision vs. comprehensive insurance. If the item you hit is NOT moving it is covered under collision. If it IS moving (or you can honestly say it might have been) it is under comprehensive. They often have different deductibles, and often the comprehensive is zero, due to glass coverage. Flying rocks are moving and hit glass.. get it?
I have made it a point to cary zero deductible comp insurance to cover the very common glass issues we have here in the west. It is a very inexpensive addition. I hit a "rolling rock" a couple of years ago with my car, and ruined the tire and expensive AL wheel. It was covered in total by my comp insurance. Another time a rock came down a hillside and took out the underside of the car. Total coverage there too. Hit a deer? They are moving and out of your (or anyone's) control, so total coverage under comp insurance if you have zero deductible.
My insurance agent taught me this. He keeps saying " It was moving, wasn't it Rob?" and I always agree, it was. And honestly, in my situations they really were moving. But keep it all in mind when you make a claim.

Thanks for everyone's help and advice on this decidedly "off-the-subject-of-GMC-motorhomes" thread. The car was towed to the VW dealer in Bangor. I have placed a call to them to discuss this morning. They are not likely to be gentle, however I think if I impress upon them that I only want the pan replaced I might get out with the remainder of my life savings. Thanks to Bill Brown for his call and to the others for advice.
I almost never use an automobile dealer for anything, but in this case the unknown was scarier than the known. Looking back I should have gotten on this forum and asked advice before AAA came to tow.
Hopefully, they'll get to it today or tomorrow and we'll be headed south.

I sent stick a PM regarding an oil pan.
I have one from a 95 Cabio 2.0 litre. Any VW gurus out there who can determine compatability?
I'll fedex it to him tonight if it will work.
EDIT:
never mind- it's a diesel, right?
