Original Post: After running great, the gmc quite running, the post was
under "need some help"

1: Plenty of gas
2: carb has gas in chamber
3: turns over will not start will not even attempt to start.

Today

1: no spark at plugs
2: 12 v going into distributor OK

Problem: PO installed a what I believe is a solid state distributor, I don't
see a coil except for what looks like one built into the distributor cap.

Since my manuals don't have this type of distributor, I don't know what to
look for.

1: the rotor turns
2: no cracks or anything broken on inside
3: Did not make any kind of noise whenb it quit running just quit like I had
turned off the ignition.

Any one that can help on what for me to test?

Serge, it is more than likely an ignition module. But first, carefully check
the plug in connector that goes into the distributor cap. The primary wire,
the one that comes from the ignition switch, frequently becomes loose in the
multipin connector at the cap. I surmise from your comment about coil in cap
that you have a later model GM HEI ignition. There is an electronic module
mounted in the place that we used to find breaker points. Remove the old
one, and take it with you to the auto parts supplier, qnd get one that
matches what you have. Be sure to get some heat sink grease to place under
the new module when it is installed. Don't forget this step. The module will
burn out very shortly if it isn't used.

Serge,
I bet PO put in an HEI distributor and the coil is in the cap.
Look at the thread one down, because this is common issue with HEI distributors. The module in the bottom dies.

Replacements are usually easy to get (Gee - I wonder why).

I don't have one and don't remember how to make a positive diagnosis, but someone will be by that does, and if you have not changed it out by then, he might be of help.

When you change it out, remember the thermal goo on the bottom or the new one won't last long.

Serge,

I assume you have MM X-7425 for a 1973/1974 GMC.

Click on the link below and Download Manual X-7525, it has the HEI
distributors in it.

Thanks for all your help, I had never worked on a vehicle with HEI prior to
today, now I think I know more than I can understand.

The coil was the culprit and not the module although I now have a spare
module.

Thank you so much for all your input and help.

I love this group and I find it a real blessing to be a part of it.
