I have been meaning to post a trip report that the family and I took last month. So here it goes....

In July, we took a trip to Patoka Lake which is about 3 hours drive south of Indianapolis. We camped at the state park which by the way has some nice campsites with a view of the lake. The lake itself is fairly large, 2nd largest in the state. Very clear water and excellent fishing too. So here we are, just a few miles from the park entrance, it is around 7pm, and the GMC quits. Try restarting but would just kick a few times but would not start running. Where we stopped was along the lake and at a spot where you could park and walk down to the lake and fish. Thinking it might be vapor lock we just hung out by the lake for 45 minutes or so to let things cool down. I tried starting again but this time it was just cranking. I verified that I have fuel in the carb and could see fuel being squirted in as I pump the throttle. So now I suspect the ignition module. Funny thing is I was thinking about bringing the spare I have from my old distributor but I thought to myself that my Dick Patterson distributor is only two years old so should not have any problems! To make things a little worse my suspected vapor lock problem I reported hear back in June was actually the ignition module going bad. I recall in one of the replies to my vapor lock post, someone stated "sounds like a ignition module going bad".

So it is now nearly 8pm, I am unfamiliar with the area and now really stressing. Lucky for me a guy came along with his family to do a little fishing. I asked him if there was an auto parts store near by and he said there is an Autozone in Jasper, 30 minuets from here. Yikes! Anyway he felt sorry for us and agreed to take me there. Fortunately Autozone had one in stock, $25. So by 9pm we were back in business with no other problems for the rest of our trip.

So if you don't have a spare ignition module in your glove box you better go out and get one before your next trip. Even if the one you have is new!!

Jon

Anyway,

Jon,

I had a less than two year old Patterson ignition module burn out last November on the way to a rally. Fortunately, I had a spare with me and was back on the road in ten minutes. When I contacted Dick about it, he said they burn out for no apparent reason and it just happens sometimes. He said he would send me a new one and to replace the Borg Warner one with that. He never did. No big deal since I now have an MSD ignition with a manual spark advance control that eliminated the module. I still carry the old components so I can change it back if something goes wrong with the MSD unit.

Which brand and model module did you install?

I understand lots of folks like the Echlin (Napa) # TP45

One of the local Napa dealers just quoted me $47. plus tax.
Seems a bit high. What's the going rate for them?

Thanks

Conventional wisdom here is to use ONLY a Delco ignition module. I successfully used a Borg/Warner from O'Reilly auto parts. I don't have info on the part number as it is under the driver's seat of my coach. Chances are they are all made in the same factory somewhere and are simply marked differently. Make sure your spark plugs are not gapped too big. That is hard on the module and can contribute to failure. Mine weren't. Also make sure you use plenty of silicone dielectric compound under the new module to dissipate the heat. The gap should be about .040".

G'day,

It's been noted here before that it's a good idea to buy a spare and install
it immediately and use the removed module as the spare. That way you KNOW
it's good!

Also don't forget the thermal grease on the bottom when you install it!

Speaking of AutoZone: Today I picked up the warranty replacement Master
Cylinder which I mentioned in another thread yesterday. I almost fainted
dead away right there in front of God & everybody when I read the box label:
"Product of USA" !!! Can that possibly mean it was actually "Made in the
USA"??? OUR USA??? Hallelujah & thank you, Fenco!

Ken H.

PS: My 14 yo grandson removed the old one & installed the new one after I
taught him to bench bleed it. My son's raising his two boys right! (At
least that's how I raised him & he's turned out darned well -- after a few
years of mischief.) :-)

I went through two of Dick's modules in a year. They fail at the most inopportune time. I do not know what brand he is using.

I replaced the second one with an AC Delco module and have not had a problem since. I do still carry a spare AC Delco module. I think it was $28.00 in Indianapolis.

Ken H,
That is great news that a master cylinder is made here and not Red China.

Ken B,
I have ad the same issue with the modules. I pay more and use Delco,
but no guarantee that it will live a long life.

Jim, when you are looking at an item that is is the same price range, the decision is a no-brainer.
Go with one we know works reliably. AC Delco.

Ken,

Ever since I could figure out how to use a wrench, I got the job of fixing the family car, lawn mower, etc. I think that's why my Dad held out for a son after having three daughters...so he wouldn't have to work on cars any more.
