I was at DMV this morning finishing up the registration on the motorhome.

The clerk insisted that I wanted "Antique" plates for the motorhome.

I passed because of the restrictions in WV, but.... if I still lived across the river in Ohio, that would have been a maybe!

Depending on the state's laws, the antique plates can be beneficial and much cheaper than normal registration.

You do have to be careful to check what restrictions they put on the usage of a coach with antique plates.

Dolph,

I don't know what the restrictions are in WV but the ones in Texas really
don't amount to much; basically you can only drive the GMC:

1) to / from maintenance
2) for testing
3) to a club event

If I missed any please correct me.

I have NEVER been stopped in and around Humble when I use it locally. I have
never been stopped in Texas. Once you're outside the state who cares!

The various GMC clubs have enough rallies you can pick the next one and say
that's where your going. Even if you're a month early, or not heading in the
right direction that's where you're going!

Virginia rules on Antiques are easy and friendly.
1. Must own or have access to another vehicle. Antique cannot be a daily driver.
2. Drive to and from rallies, and repair facilities any distance.
3. Local driving (?) restricted to 250 mile radius.
4. Must be insured.
5. No inspection, just self certification that it is safe. NO smog inspection.
6. $50 life time plates, $10 extra for personalized plates. Hint: GMC MH is mine.

My experience was the opposite. I asked the clerk about the antique tag and she said I didn't want it because of the restrictions (can only drive it to and from shows, and maximum 1500 miles a year or something like that). Then she made me tell her I brought it into the state a day later than I had originally stated and she saved me the late registration fee. My arm still hurts from all that twisting.

Same in West Virginia. It's a by product of being politically active.

I drove my 66 Parklane to a luncheon recently and received a call from the Chief of Police. It was legitimate testing!

The comment had more to do with rare/discontinued parts and work arounds than anything.

Here (Oregon) the Special Purpose (SP) registration is about 1/3 the cost of normal registration and NEVER EXPIRES! (Normal expires every 2 years. This a big deal as I have three... all registered and sometimes even insured.) Plus I do not have to pass emissions! (Both my '78 and '77 would have to pass every 2 years.)

The allowed usage is pretty much what Rob stated for Texas. I handle it about how Rob recommends. (Someday it'll always be true.)

I see the SP plates being used on all kinds of older "daily drivers" around here. Seems nobody is watching this....

In Georgia, we get to pay an extra $10 per year, IIRC. That's IT.

And if I still had a second GMC, I'd have to keep it insured or turn in the
tags.

And you wouldn't believe the rigamarole required to re-register a "totalled"
vehicle!
