Is there a favorite CV boot nowadays?
Did these CVs a few years ago and one of the clamps actually slipped
off. I think it took the outer "lip" of the CV boot with it. Obviously
did NOT have them tight enough.
Anyway... I've seen the blue boots in various pictures. Can't seem to
find a part number for them. The Dorman version I find at Advanced Auto
and Autozone look very different than what I have.

Kelvin,
Unfortunately the silicone blue boots are long gone.
I was fortunate enough to get two from Mike Beaton up in Nova Scotia, one
from JimB, and one from Emery Stora so I have them on both my GMC's.

"The boots Stick bought from Advance Auto, made by Dorman, seem to be pretty
nice pieces -- 5 or 6 folds of soft, resilient material. Only time will
tell how they stand up, but they applied easily. They even came with
Band-It clamps, though they MAY not be long enough to double wrap -- we used
my bulk material from McMaster-Carr."
I expect to use one of them on my son Alan's coach before the week's out.

It might look different, but with multiple folds made of materialthat
is plyable, it has been working for us for few years.

but
-have you looked for new CV joints lately?
-have you looked for new bearings?? ( Jim K has a bunch - buy some)
-I know you are looking for new boots, and clamps
-have you added the zerk to get 100,000 mile bearings?
-is this the last time you will ever touch your front end?
or
-will you destroy all of the active (front end) components in 30,000
miles by removing the bearings (again)
-can you find anyone who can replace your current bearings (while on the road)?
- front seals , ( wonder how long those will be available?)
-is it time to replace all the rubber and reinforce the lower control arms?

I bought a Dorman boot today and tried to install it tonight.
Dorman 614-003. "Uni-Fit" it says on the box. $20 from Autozone.
Well, it don't fit GMC well. Two of us trying to stretch the big end
into place and it kept slipping off. Maybe if I could have kept the
rubber and the cast part spotless it might have stayed but with the
effort it took just to get it stretched I found no way to do that. And
there was no well defined "groove" for the clamp to nestle into, either.
I'd think twice about using that boot. Maybe you found a different one.
Ended up ordering a NAPA part that looks like the old boot. NAPA
686-1064. (the NAPA 2456 wasn't a good number anymore. ) Won't know how
it fits until tomorrow evening.
Also found that the clamp numbers were still good. 3415 and 3416 (small
and large) And got the better clamp tool as well (3191)

Hi Kelvin,
Same thing here. I managed to get the uni on using a loop in some dental floss. As I was reinstalling it I noticed it was so close to other thing (can't remember what)that I was afraid to leave it.
I went to my local discount parts store and bought a cheap one. It looks just like our old one. Fits like it also (no problems)
I did not band the little end as a test. I have driven 500 miles and no leaks.

Strange. The best explanation I can figure is that the Dorman boot you got
is not the same as the one Stick got -- I don't know that number.
I'll let you know the results when we try on Alan's coach -- AFTER checking
with Stick for his number. :-)
