Steve,
About the only thing that could hold back the grey water is the valve
at the tank. OR, you don't have anything in the tank to start with.

Like someone has already said, you have a valve problem or a blockage. (or an empty tank... )

What type of Birch do you have? (Side or Rear bath?) How is your plumbing set up?

My '78 REAR BATH Birch did not have a separate gray tank valve. It had one BLACK tank valve and one valve before the 3 inch dump. The 3 inch dump valve "doubles" as the gray tank valve.

As delivered from Coachman you can not dump the gray AFTER the black. (I can NOW... I changed mine.)

Hi Mike

thanks for the comeback. I have a 78 Birch with the back bath. it
has two valves one near the end of pipe and the black valve is in line
about 2 feet in . I was able to dump the gray water

then the black valve. Now the gray valve Lets out nothing and the black
dumps as normal.. What did you do to fix yours? I am almost sure the
gray tank has water in it.

Some units are plumbed so most of the gray water from the sink travel
into the black.
Raise the front up and lower the rear and you can determine which
dumps into the gray.
Need additional assistance call me on our toll free line (800)752-7502

If you dumped your black tank, you already dumped your gray.

As the 1978 rear bath Birch was delivered from Coachman, you CAN NOT "not" dump the gray if you are dumping the black. The "T" that the black tank dumps through is OPEN to the gray tank. Effectively you dump your black tank through your gray tank. (I know it is dumb... but that is how they did it.)

I understand that some of the earlier Coachman products, with the dump centered in the rear, you could dump either tank, in any order you wanted. But the plumbing was VERY easy to drag....

I looked for a picture of my '78 before I changed it and didn't find a good one. I did upload what I could find:

<http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showgallery.php?cat=5842>

The picture with the macerator doesn't show the black tank valve. It is just upstream of the "T" on the right.

What did I do to fix mine?

I added a 2 inch valve (getting hard to find) just forward of that same "T" on the right. Without my added valve, the "T" is open to the gray tank. (The forward tank with the white sealant in the picture.) With this valve, I can dump either tank... in either order.

I also installed the macerator. Note the picture was during a trial fit... while very close, it is a little different now. I have three valves under the rear bumper, one valve handle near the Onan exhaust, a toggle switch in the bumper mount and a hose in a plastic holster.

There isn't much space under a Birch for all this additional plumbing.... now if I have been replacing the tanks, I could have arranged things "a bit" better.
