Every now & then, there's been some chatter on here about fuel usage with the Onan running to power both of the roof A/C's versus running with the dash A/C on.

Unless my math is wrong, which, of course, it never is (???), it seems to me that running with the Onan going uses a little less fuel then using the dash A/C - Not to mention the increased power without the drag on the coach engine and the more even interior cooling which benefits our 4 dogs while on the road.

I've tried to find some definitive stats on this on the various sites & postings but can't seem to.....which, I guess, is normal, because according to my wife, I can't find anything.

Is my math & theory wrong - anyone have any thoughts or stats on this?

Thanks,

Steve Nowak

Steve,

I reckon running the numbers would not be anywhere as accurate as doing it.

Give it a go next time you take your GMC out for a trip.

<>

According to the manual and several recently reported measurements by owners, the Onan burns less than 1 GPH at full load. If you are going 60 MPH and getting 10 MPG you would have burned 6 GPH, but now with the roof airs on you burn 7 GPH, aprox 8.5 MPG.
Someone else will have to provide data on the fuel use with dash air, since I have none.

Jim,

To quote Mrs. Gardner, fifth grade math teacher; "figures don't lie but lots
of liars figure!"

Or:

"There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics."
Popularized by Mark Twain who attributed it to British Prime Minister
Benjamin Disraeli.

Some time ago I posted the following,

I tried using the Onan and the roof air instead of the Dash air, after 2 trips totally 1700 miles, I found that the difference in MPG dropped from 8.9 with the dash air to 6.8 with the Onan and roof air.
It may well be that my Onan is not set up right but it sure starts and runs nicely.

Steve,

I run mornings with my add-on dash air that JimB installed six years ago. In afternoons on the road I use the Honda generator and roof air. My engine runs about 5-10 warmer with the dash air. Gas consumption is about the same both ways.

I no longer have the original Onan in my coach, but the Generac I replaced it with uses 1/2 gallon/hour at full load. If you were getting 10 mpg at 60mph, you'd burn 6 gallons in one hour just driving down the road.

Adding another 1/2 gallon to that amount would drop the fuel consumption down to 9.23 mpg (assuming I remember my algebra correctly) if you're traveling at 60 mph.

All you gave us was the theory, I didn't see any math.
How many gallons per hour does the generator burn while powering the air conditioners? How many additional gallons per hour does the Olds engine burn when the dash A/C is running?
I would guess for the engine size you might lose 1 mpg by runnning the dash A/C. Rough mpg for these old motorhomes is 10 mpg. That's 6 gallons an hour at 60 mph. Turn on the dash A/C and you get 9 mpg so it takes about 6.6 gallons an hour.
Does the generator use less than 0.6 gallons per hour when running the rooftop A/C units?

with only one roof ac on sitting in drive way i got better than 2 hours off one gallon. so i assume sine my wife rides at sofa a,d ac cooling her, then onan and roof ac much better than dash ac.
