After reading all the conversation on the trip to the car show, I thought I would add another sucessful trip to the mix. Our only two trips prior were to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and my run down to DuQuoin last fall. This time we bit off a bit more. Over the top of Superior and then down into Minnesota to see family and out to South Dakota to see for the in-laws reunion. Just under 3,000 miles. Thought I would see at least one other GMC, but no luck. I had done a number of things to the big green bus, like tires and Eagles, fuel lines, electric backup fuel pump, grease all around, and refabed knuckle. By the way the knuckle was not worn as thought but an over bored replacement that Cinnabar was selling for a while. Our only issues were that the trans does not seem to want to start out in low and if put into low, not want to shift up. So, now that we are home the vaccumn modulator will get some serious attention. Also the heat of the Dakota's seemed to invite the vapor lock problem, but the back up pump back at the tank pushed the fuel through when at the dreaded stop lights or pushing a headwind at speed on the SD interstate. All in all the big girl never let us down in spite of our doubts at times and proved to be up to any task thrown at her. Fortunately she always had a place to plug in and the two roof AC's can handle anything out there. Of course if our perfectly running generator would actually produce electricity we could go off grid, but that may have to wait for next year. Of course if anyone has a suggestion to cure the Onan 6000, I would be forever greatful. Happy trails....

Michael,
I replaced the bridge rectifier on my Onan. It ran great but put out no AC. Jim K has them for $10. <http://appliedgmc.com/prod.itml/icOid/974>
It's a fairly simple shade-tree unbolt a few things, unplug a few wires, reverse, and you're done. Frankly I don't remember what I did to determine that the bridge rectifier was the issue, other than ask on this list.

Transmission shifting issues resolved! After much reading in the archives, thanks to all, I found the vacuum modulator had been bent at the stem going into the trans. So replaced it with a new old stock similar one, Fram 2329 which was adjustable. Droped the pan , cleaned and replaced filter and ATF. Test drive was disappointing as it was even worse, no first in D and tall upshifts 2 to 3. After even more reading, took on the governor. The valve was very dirty and sticking. Adjusted the VM 1/2 turn counterclockwise and now she runs like new. This forum, those active vendors and experianced indiviuals that contribute and these machines are amazing!
New members, suggest making use of the archives. In my search I included a name or two of people who seem to have the most knowledge on a particlular subject, like: Manny govenor vaccumn modulator. Seems to get you to the answer quicker.

My 4K Onan Wouldn't Work In The '73 Either ~
Last year we were camped at the St Joseph peninsula State Park
and the ole Green Barbarian was groaning contently.
A GMC newby dropped by and stated that his generator always started
and ran perfectly but would not produce any power,
We walked over to his 26 footer and after spending a lot of time
checking every thing out I thought of something that happened to me
when I purchased my first motorhome back in the 70's
I had plugged into a 30 amp pole at a campsite the night before
and then moved to a primitive campsite on the waterfront.
The generator would not produce and after 2 nights on battery power
Then an experienced camper came by, looked at my delima and
simply plugged the end of my power cord "Back Into The Coach" ~
So I Did The Same Thing For The Newby
{and won't describe his GMC or mention his name}
~ Joe ~
BTW,
I have never told this one on myself before
