What purpose does the wire hooked to the onan fuel filter serve? The new pump from JimK had its own inline filter so I have not used the onan filter. Onan starts fine if the coach is running but no-go otherwise.

There is no wire running to the Onan fuel filter. If you are talking about the little part that is in the fuel line just before the fuel pump that is an electric solenoid valve, not a filter.
Its purpose is to shut off the fuel going to the Onan when it is not running.

Perhaps someone rewired the valve so that it doesn't get power from the Onan but only from the GMC engine 12 v system. If that is the case then is could explain why yours doesn't run without the engine running. Try putting a jumper to it from you house battery and try to start the Onan. If it then runs, you have found the problem.

Some people have eliminated the solenoid valve but there are conditions where the fuel could be forced into the Onan carb without its running.

I'm not real sure about jumping the Onan fuel solenoid valve to the
house battery -- not when there's a suspicion that it's currently
hooked to the Ignition circuit. Who knows what else may become
powered through that jumper? Better to check the voltage at the
solenoid, with a meter or test light, while cranking the Onan -- if
there's no power, then MOVE the connection to the correct Onan
location (the ignition coil).

I still think the only problem is a bad house battery or connections
to that battery. Having the engine running just provides higher
voltage to the Onan.

Obviously I should not have assumed anything but I would assume that one would first unplug the solenoid wire and then attach the jumper to the solenoid.
Then there would not be any attachment to the control board.
