I seem to be having a problem with the house battery heating up. I have read the issues about the combiner and have disconnected the starter battery when pugged in. The Progressive Dynamics converter seems to be cooking the battery. The only way I have found to make it less hot is to put the PD in the maintanence mode. Problem is it will not stay there, reverting back to full charge. The age of the battery is unknown. Any thoughts?

This sounds like a shorted cell in a battery but it could be a problem with the PD unit.
Put a volt meter across the battery and see what the voltage is. If you read 14 volts or less with the PD unit turned on, then the problem is with the battery(s). If you read above 14.5 volts and above then the PD unit has a problem. I would leave that combiner disconnected until you find the problem. I hate to see you cook the starting battery also. There is seldom a reason to charge the starting battery when parked unless you are running the dash radio or are parking it for months and want it topped off in maintenance mode. So leaving it connected may just compound your problem.

bukzin wrote on Wed, 20 July 2011 08:38 | I would like to buy a smart charger (PD or ??) to charge my
50 cc scooters. They have very small 12v batteries.
The scooters sit without starting for months, so need a little help.
What should I look for in a good charger? Which specs are
more important to look for?

Most of these things do not have advertised "specs" as such but just a description of operation. I have both a Battery Tender (R) and a Battery Minder (R). Both do the job on my vehicles and motorcycles. Another alternative would be a real cheap trickle charger and a lamp timer. Set the timer to turn on for the shortest time possible and plug the cheap charger into it. It should keep the battery charged without boiling it out. I used this method many years ago without problem but believe the newer devices take better care of the battery, especially if equipped with the desufation system.

Good tips.
I have several scooters/trail bikes. If money were not object
which charger/tender would you get?
Thanks

I seem to recall that Battery Tende makes a charger with multiple outputs for your type of situation.
I have used a Battery Tender with good luck, as well as small Schumacher chargers. I've even had luck with some small Harbor Freight chargers, but I always assume you get what you pay for.
Hooking a small one up to a lamp timer may not be a bad idea as well.

June of '03? OK, 8 years of service is a good life for a battery. Replace and continue on.

Thanks for the help. I have measured the voltage at 14.0 as best measured on the anolog meter with the PD converter on full charge. I have pulled the battery and discovered it is a Interstate 4D-XHD 1000cca which my parts supplied says is a industrial heavy duty battery, but not a deep cycle. Which is probably correct since the ID says indicates the cold cranking amps. It was installed in june of 2003. Measuring from cell to cell, I have 1 volt from + to cell, 2 volts from cell to cell and actually a slight negative from last cell to neg. post. So, there is the problem. The most cost effective solution is two 6 volt deep cycle golf cart batteries, which should be far superior to what I have had. Any further thoughts?

It sounds like you found your problem.
Go for the new ones. Sam's Club is the cheapest that I know of and they go through pallets of them every summer. So they are selling you fresh batteries. Mine have been installed for 7 or 8 years now and they still going strong.

While I was at Costco getting new tires for the GMC, I noted that they now carry Kirkland Golf Cart Batteries. They were $90 each. I've had good luck with Trojan T105's in other applications, but they are more expensive.
