I research cars for at least 6 months before I make a purchase. My goal is to know more about the car I am looking for than the salesman. He/she must be generally informed about all they sell, I just need to know about the one I am going to buy.
We are going to need a new car to be towed behind the GMC in a year or so and I have been doing my homework. Cheverolet is coming out with the Sonic this fall. I think with the turbo and 6 speed manual it will be a great car to pull behind the GMC. It is rated at over 40 mpg. They have cancelled the Aveo. This Sonic is on a new unibody and made here in USA. The reports are that even with the 40 mpg rating it is still a peppy little car, much more so than the Ford and Honda that it will compete with.
Anyway, should you be thinking about a toad, maybe you might want to take a look at the Sonic. I really do not care which car you have and you may not like this one. Just food for thought. We have 130 on the Vibe gt and it might make 200 as it has a Toyota high performance engine. It is getting a bit beat up though. It gets 30 plus mpg and is a blast to drive with this engine and the 6 speed manual. The Sonic will be comparable in weight and size at 2700 lbs dry. 5 door hatch or a sedan will be available. I like the hatch as the rear door handles are hidden and it looks kinda like a 2 door from the side.
Anyway, just sitting out here enjoying our cool GMC and wanted to share this information with you.

I too have been watching/looking at options for a towd that I also would use as a daily driver. If I find one I'll likely sell my 2004 Murano, which I dearly love.
I saw the Sonic, but I'm a little concerned Chevy will make it too econo inside to keep the price down. You might also look at the 3-door Hyundai Veloster that will soon be coming out. It's kind of like the Mini Clubman, which is also a nice towd. It will be around 2400 lbs for the manual and will have a 200hp turbo version to follow sometime after the normally aspirated initial model. Hyundai is also planning a hatchback replacement for the older Elantra Touring that will look more like the new sedan in styling. It's supposed to debut at the Frankfurt Autoshow in September. It should be around 2700-2800 lbs. Heck, Hyundai will have a new Accent too, that weigh even less will compete with the Ford Fiesta, Honda Fit and Sonic.
I looked at the new Ford Focus hatch too. Nice car and should be towable with the 6-speed dual clutch auto. I'm just not much of a Ford person (sorry if anyone is offended).
Don't forget about the Fiat 500, but wait to see whether it starts falling apart first.
I'm personally leaning towards the Mini Countryman 6sp manual.
A little heavy at 3000lbs, but hey, it drives like a BMW. Oh yeah, it is one.
Bottom line, there will be a lot of new towables in the next few years with good gas milage to help balance out the 8-10 miles per gallon in the GMC towing them

Gary,
On later TDIs you need the engine computer, entire dash and associated
electronics to run the engine. The way around that is to have the
injection pump converted to marine service. Then you only need one wire
to control fuel flow. It's been a while since I looked into this, but I
think you can find sources by googling "TDIM" or "tdi marine".
This is a project that I've been interested in for a long time. Keep us
updated if you go forward with it.

I did notice on the Acme site that they say that the kits
are for pre-1998 VW enginnes, too.

Yeah, Hans indicated that. For CA smog I need a diesel that is the same year
or newer than the car. He also indicated that I could do a TD engine and not
need the computer at all.

The "Greenie Chicks" here in Oregon wear open toed sandals made fom hemp,
tie dyed fabric strips wrapped around, have more hair in their armpits than
I have on my face, and bathe once or twice a year whether they need it or
not. No makeup in the world would help most of them whose skin looks like
leather from all the exposure to the elements. Not my idea of anything I
would want to get next to, or even downwind from. The diesel exhaust from
your conversion would be preferable, in my humble opinion. But, to each his
own.

Dan,
Anything you tow will weigh over 4,000 lbs by the time you two are packed
for a trip. Get a trailer and a motorcycle!
Some smart engineer should come up with an ele/gas car that has wheel
motors that charge the batteries while being towed. Can't be that much to
it. An ele motor is nothing but a generator.

Gary, your Tracker is an 89, right? After you do a diesel
conversion, it SHOULD be smog exempt. Diesel smog checks
start with year 1995, I believe...

Hi Terry, It's a 91 but any diesel conversion needs to be of same year
engine or newer according the Hans (German Auto Parts)

While he didn't SAY it, I suspect Steve is thinking that the charging would only be during times of light braking. (Charge the batteries rather than use the brakes.) This is the idea of many hybrid cars to recover energy during down hills and coming up to stops.
I could see this, it would require software in the hybrid car computer.
