Hi all was poking around pics of DixieLanders at Noccalva Falls and noticed Paul and Billy Bennets coach seems to have a side exiting exaust am i correct if correct does it exit both sides or just one.
The pic is about the 21st.I ask this as i have always entertained the idea of a set of "laker" style pipes on my GMC. Has anybody done this or seen this.Think this would be way cool and just a little redneck.Any thoughts ,pics ,links, advice on this modifacation

Terry,
Not sure about Paul's GMC exhaust.
Chuck Garton had twin side exhausts on one of his coaches, however, IIRC it
burned to the ground because the hot exhausts baked the fuel lines and they
sprang a leak.

I wouldn't put side exhaust on a motorhome.
Too hard to make a decent performing and quiet system.
AND the exhaust noise will enter the coach in the middle making it louder

Good idea,but not on a coach as the sound from the door bottom is loud.

I'm also considering a sidepipe setup too, but would run mine a little differently intergrating an H-pipe setup tp balance the offset exhaust pulses, and resonated pipes to keep the sound mellow. I think the coach would benifit from an H-pipe setup with headers....

Rob, an "X" pipe is used on dual exhaust systems to balance exhaust pulses
between cylinder heads. It is normally placed in the forward 1/3 of the
system, after the headers and before the mufflers. Imagine it as a dual
crossover where the exhaust from the dr side crosses over to the pass side
and vice versa. It is not used in a 2 into 1 system like the GMC stock
exhaust, as the 'Y" pipe accomplishes the same thing more or less. At the
RPMs that out GMCs operate, benefits are slight. The correctly sized headers
will do more for low and mid range torque than a dual system. I am not the
only one who thinks this way, ask Dick Paterson.

An "H" pipe is usually just a short connecting pipe welded between the L & R
sides. Cheaper than an "X", but doesn't flow downstream as well as the "X".
The largest benefit to be had from exhaust modifications more often than
not, is elimination of any sharp bends or protruding materials into the
exhaust stream. Smooth transitions between heads and headers, and any joints
or curves show improvements in flow. At high RPMs the benefits are much
greater. What can kill low end and mid range torque is often too large
inside diameter in the areas immediately downstream from the cylinder heads,
ie; too large of header tubes.
