G'day,

I have a spare tire cover for The Blue Streak from Frank Jenkins that has
the red GMC in the center. Ken H. noted that if it was hooked up to the
brakes it would be a great third brake light and I agreed.

I then got the crazy idea of hooking it up so that when I signaled a right
turn the G would light, then the M, then the C, and finally the right turn
signal bulb. Left turn would do the opposite C - M - G - LTSL.

Jim H. noted that all I'd need is the sequential flasher unit from a Mercury
Cougar or Thunderbird from about 1969 or 70.

Being an optimist I went to AutoZone to see if they had one and naturally
they didn't. They did provide the location. Trunk area, driver side, rear of
wheel well, under trim panels, mounted on lower fender well

The odds of me finding a T-Bird or Cougar from that era here in Australia in
a junk yard is as probably worse than me winning the lottery, I'd appreciate
it if anyone spots one in a Men's Mall over there to check and see if the
turn signal flasher is there and if yes buy it and I'll pay for it.

Thanks,
Rob M.

I do not see any that old listed at Pick-n-pull:
<http://www.picknpull.com/check_inventory.aspx>

I suspect the Cougars and Thunderbirds of that age are now being picked up by specialty yards.

I know other cars had the same blinker pattern. I also know it shouldn't be that hard to piece together some electronic parts to roll your own. There are a few on "the net" who could design you something in their sleep.... Rolling Eyes

Rob, I am going to look around for you. I think what you need can be had new. I have a flashing 3rd led light on the GMC and a flashing 7th brake led light in the rear window of the Vdub. {want folks to know I am stopping} Anyway, I got the flashers on line somewhere and I think they have sequential units. Will let you know what I find.

Rob,

The new Mustangs do exactly what you want. The old Cougar's had a sequence of four flashing lights, but the new Mustangs have just three. It must be new on the 2011 models.

Of course it's probably controlled by some computer!

Forget the old motorized sequencers... get yourself one of these, or similar (there are a dozen brands of these little PLC's that look like they all come from the same cookie cutter).

Its a Programmable Logic Controller. Write a simple ladder logic program to make the rear lights do what ever you like.

Rob, $14.00 versus $144.00. Tough choice, high tech vs old school? The
motorized one pictured is the one that I had in mind. User servicable parts
inside, too.

Bruce,

That is nice and all, but this is ROB we are talking about here. You Know, the guy with the electrical aptitude of a yellow canary (sorry, but a factual evaluation). There is no way he can draw and understand a logic ladder.

You want a Harley screwed together, now that is a different story.

Rob,

I like your idea, but there is a problem with any existing hardware from passcar service. None of the vehicles I know have signal lights that cross the center. All the lights are on the same side. This doesn't look like your plan to me.

This would not be insurmountable, but it certainly adds a measure of complexity.

Here I was just working up plans to use the GMC on the tire cover as a center brake light.

Matt,

Nothing to apologize for!

As Clint said in one of the Dirty Harry movies; "a man's got to know his
limitations!"

It is rather funny to me as I can EASILY comprehend mechanics / physics but
for some reason electrics / electronics just makes my head hurt.

Hundred and forty scoots?  Kind of dear, but not out of line for someone building in small lots and looking to turn a profit.
Three Ne555s, three power plastic transistors and a handful of resistors/caps and a perf board - fat city.  I'd build two of them, and drive the bulbs through isolating diodes, then I could run them either direction.

See... that is what I was talking about in the first reply in this thread! Smile

But having your blinkers start on the opposite side might not be looked on favorably by the law.

Maybe M, C, then right tail light or M, G and left tail light.
