On our '75 sofa, there were big holes punched in the foam where the buttons went.
Something like an inch in diameter, which surprised me a bit. I had to toss
the foam as it was mildewed, so can't measure. The buttons were anchored in back
with cardboard circles. I'll try to get pics if/when I tackle the dinette.
