Good Afternoon

Although I converted to Duracool, multiple times per year by AC goes dead and I
need to recharge. I recently purchased a can of dye and an ultraviolet light,
last night I put the dye in the system and began recharging it with Duracool.
Within seconds I found my problem. One of the fittings had a crack in it and I
didn't even need the black light to see the dye, it was clearly visible. I
wiggled the line and that was apparently enough to cause the fitting to
completely fail. I removed the fitting and did some running around today to
find a new one. I should be able to have this problem resolved in an hour or so
tonight.

That dye really identified my problem quick, wished I would have done it 2 years
ago. I'd highly recommend it.

You need to spend much more than an hour to fix it. You need to evacuate it for several hours first.

Ray, Now that you found that leak and repaired it, get out some spray soap (Simple green) and wash that are down thoroughly with a garden hose. Then look at that area with your ultra violet light. Make sure ALL of the dye is gone. That stuff sticks around for a long time. Sometimes it is years. If you ever need to go looking for another leak in the future you need to know you are starting with a clean A/C system. When looking for a slow leak sometimes you only find small traces of dye with the light and a clean system is absolutely necessary.

Good for you Ray...
Thats what they used in my vehicles when they AC failed. usually finds the leak fast too.
The GMC had the under dash AC added but it lost the gas in short order.... thats another project....

The mechanic found some freon with an ingrediaant that will seal the system. if you have an evaporator in the dash that you cant get at, this is an option. It has worked on some tough problems.

Good that you found it and can fix er now... make sure you polish the metal when you are done so it all looks as good as your new paint.....

I've heard a lot of negative things about the LEAK FIXER products. I read that
they react with the atmosphere air and if you open up your system to work on it
and the atmosphere gets into your system it jambs everything up.

Has anyone had any experience with this ???

No personal experience but I have been told and read in the past that they can cause a problem with the small orifice in the expansion valve.
I personally do not like to put additives into oil, radiator or air conditioning systems. The factory doesn't. It can mask problems and might be temporary and then you have gunk in your system to contend with if they don't work.

Emery,

Thanks for ruining my day! I read about the leak fix products from Dura Cool
and figger'd it would be an easy way to fix the leakage problem I have
Double Trouble's A/C.

Then I read your message below and said to myself "as s$&t, he's right!"

I only know of one product that GM has made to use in the engine. It has a
part number which I don't remember off the top of my head, but is commonly
referred to as EOS, which stands for engine oil supplement. It is used when
warranty repairs are done to flat tappet cams and lifters. It is a black
nasty fairly thick liquid that is poured over the cam and lifters after they
are installed and before the intake manifold is bolted in place. It looks a
lot like crane cam lube, with Moly additives. It is for the purpose of break
in of the cam and lifters. When GM went to 1.6 - 1 rocker arms in 1967, they
experienced a bunch of cam failures. The company issued a silent recall
similar to the one for the olds diesels. If the customer came in and
complained of poor idle and a lack of power, they would replace the cam and
lifters, and if the timing chain was loose, they would replace that also. As
I recall, the flat rate allowed on a car with no AC was something like 2.8
hrs. You really had to whistle dixie to do one in that time, but that is all
the bean counters said that it should take. Most of them never turned a
wrench in their lives in a dealership. I still use it when I can find a
dealership that carries it. Good stuff.

Rob, I have a leak stopper treatment in my '98 Silverado. Had a leaking evaporator. Service tech said it works ok on the low pressure side and if you catch the leak early. Been 18 months now.
