In driving the GMC around lately it is running hot, now granted it is
~102. But in the past it seems i never go over 195. today i got to 210
and luckily once i pulled off highway it cooled down to 205 (not fast
though). but it has never been that hot. I can not hear any extra fan
kicking on, so:
question 1. nothing wrong?, bad thermostat?, bad fan clutch, bad water
pump? or something else?
any tests or things i can try to narrow it down?
thanks again.. and again.. and.. well you know.
I am sure you feel like i do when my 4 year old asks lots of questions.

David, you need to change to a 180 t-stat and check the fan clutch.

David,
A 50/50 mixture of water and ethylene glycol antifreeze in the cooling
system will boil at 225° if the cap is open. But pressurizing the system
with a spring-loaded cap raises the boiling temperature of the mix about 3°
for every 1 psi of pressure. With a 15 psi cap, the boiling temperature will
be up around 265° F. I would do the
simple things first. Check the cap. I think the GMC recommended is 9 lbs.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong on that.

I have a cap 3 years old. 9 lbs maybe 12.. i will go look, The GMC was
running great, i have just never ran that hot before.
the fluids were chaged last year with a 50 50 mix.,
can i use a local parts store;napa,autozone, advance, orielys.. for
the thermostat? is it an easy install/fix?

david, to really check the fan clutch for lock up operation, drive the gmc until hot, remove the hatch and drive again...if your fan clutch locks in , you will definitely know it....

went for a spin, little stop and go (shich lowered the heat) and
highway 55-60. temp got to 220 per my gauge. no extra fin kick. got
home open the hatch and the fan seemed normal. at idol at home temp
was pretty constant 210.

Armand,
I think your radiator air dams are brilliant. Using rubber mudflap material makes it weatherproof, pliable, and strong enough for the wind. I like the pre-cut air dams that Jim K sells but before I buy them I might just try something like this.

I had some running hot problems and think that I have it figured out. It all started when I replaced the standard temp sender with the recommended NAPA one and my OEM gauge started showing hot. I replaced it with a mechanical gauge and found out that I was running as hot at 240 when going across the desert. I started changing fan clutches and finally installed an aluminum radiator. Drove 7400 miles last summer to the east coast, Canada, and back with no trouble but lots of experimenting. Dave that clutch fan from autozone looks like a medium duty fan that is similiar to a Hayden 2747 and it has a similar part #. If you get a Hayden you need a 2797. Or get one from Jim K.

I have a '403 with an aluminum intake ~
It is a simple job to replace the thermostat ~
~ loosen the 2 thermostat housing bolts `
~ lift up the housing and remove the thermostat and gasket ~
~ Clean off gasket remants from the housing and intake manifold ~
~ Put in the new Robert Shaw 180 thermostat ~
~ Put the gasket in place ~
~ Reattach the thermostat housing ~
~ Tighten he 2 bolts ~
Add Coolant ~
Be Careful when you remove the 2 Thermostat Housing Bolts ~
mine were gualded to the intake manifold and I broke them off ~
{the eazy job then became an expensive one}

With the engine dead, reach in and spin the fan by hand. If there is
resistance, your fan is probably good. If it freewheels with little
or no resistance, it is history.
Most satisfied GMCers have installed the AC Delco 15-4644. Lots have
tried lots of others (including me) and finally got tired of messin
around and just got the Delco. There's a bad apple in every barrel
but 9 times out of 10, you'll be happy with the Delco.
And you WILL hear it when it comes on.

1 Again, the thermostat has nothing to do with how hot the engine gets. The thermostat has to do only with how cold the engine gets. Once it is open and the temp rises, it is still open. 195 is the best choice for many other reasons (emissions, sludging, acidic oil, economy, wear and so on)
2 If you pass the "some good drag with the hand spin test" then there is still fluid in the clutch. That's a must. One more thing you can try before replacing the clutch as "bad" is to make sure the bimetal spring on the front is clean. They all weep a tiny bit of silicone fluid and the huge mass of air going by there deposits dirt. It can get so gummed up it won't properly turn the valve in the center to redirect the fluid inside (engage) I use Zep Aerosolve degreaser with an extension tube to spray it off like in parts washing. (a helper is nice to opperate the can while you aim). I suppose a WD-40 type thing would wash it off as well and leave some basic protection, but try to avoid it running down on the belts and pulleys. Jim K also recommended the cleaning the spring trick. I think a lot are prematurely replaced. They are not that complicated. If the bearings are good, the seals are good (still has fluid) and it hasn't been so overheated that the thermal spring is off calibration, it should work.
