We arrived at the Dixielanders rally at Noccalula Falls, AL yesterday
afternoon. I'm proud to report that the GMC ran flawlessly. The
Cad500 ran right on its normal 205*F despite the 95*F+ temperature and
107*F heat index. Even under those conditions, we didn't need the
roof air; the dash unit kept the entire coach very comfortable -- SHE
rode on the sofa about 1/2 of the 213 miles.

Today, Paul & Barbara Frist and Alex & Ramona Sirum were the last of
the 12 or so coaches now arrived. They were running a little late,
because Paul blew a 7 year old tire on his SOB (BIG tire) and had to
wait for road service to come replace it. He's going out tomorrow to
replace all of his tires. Alex plans to do the same since those on
his Newell are about the same age.

During the discussions, Jim Walters commented that he blew a tire on
his GMC on the way home to GA from Bean Station -- 7 years old.

We had a lot of other tire woe tales, older than those, to share. The
overwhelming consensus here: 5 years old, get rid of them.

Ken,

That has been my thinking all along. I've had my GMC 6 years in March when I replaced the whole set of Bridgestones. There were no checks or cuts but I felt that was enough. Ran the old set at the Orlando Speed World in March and off they went for a new set of Bridgestones. I've seen too many old tires and air bags blow that should have been retired way before they failed.

I am with you on this Ken. Also, I have seen fairly new tires blow on GMCs. Reason, low on air. "Well, it did not look low". How many times have we heard that? They wont "look low", they are radials. Check those rascals with a gauge on a regular basis.

Dan, I check mine before each trip. Enough $#!^ happens to me without me going looking for it. Tomorrow starts a Tidewater Crab Rally. Being Crab Prez means I won't be at this Dixielander rally.

On a side note: Sold the house in Virginia (close on 28Jul) and bought a one in Heathrow, Fl (close on that one 5Aug). Must say my head is swimming with too many documents.

Great Jim. I am glad things are working out for you. Good to see good things happen to good people. I too have enough "stuff" happen to me. So, I try to head off any I can with a little preventative maintenance, and tire monitors. I even change my oil every 3,000 miles and still lost two engines within 12 months.

We've got the light on for you. Don't be confused by all the signs
pointing into the "campground". You've got to go past a couple of
marked entrances, past "Jack's" restaurant on the left, and across the
"river" before actually reaching the campground entrance at the
traffic light -- big brown sign on the left there.

Joe,

Last I heard, 23 coaches are to be here. We've probably got 15-18 now.

I didn't bring a camera, but Chuck Boyd arrived while we were at
lunch; he's always good about making & posting photos.

Too bad you couldn't find enough Saran Wrap for those windows so you
could be here. :-)

You could always come for a day or two & stay in one of the cabins here.

Clarification of my posting yesterday about tire problems: Paul
Frist's R. front tire failure was on his '03? Foretravel 40' SOB. He
has tire monitors on all wheels, which monitor absolute pressure,
sudden pressure changes, and temperature. They'd all just come back
from resetting and calibration at the factory. Since the failed tire
is immediately behind the entrance door at the very front near the
driver, he should have heard a tread starting to separate.

He heard and felt nothing before the tire suddenly blew as he
approached a bridge. He was very glad to have been on the bridge,
because the wheel hitting the curb was the only thing that enabled him
to steer straight ahead while coming to a stop. The 22.5" Alcoa
certainly bears scars! The tire was so destroyed that there's no way
to tell whether it threw the belt, blew out the side, or what.
Basically, the shredded sidewalls were left on the rim with everything
else gone.

The fiberglass panel surrounding the wheel well is gone, as is the
fiberglass outer panel on the 3' long basement door immediately behind
it. Undoubtedly SEVERAL thousand dollars of repair & paint work.

He was lucky to find one dealer with a used (5 yr old) tire in the
correct size. He's going to Atlanta on Monday to have the closest set
of 6 new tires installed. He's buying Toyo's after having had many
problems with Michelins on his past GMC. Alex will be going with him
for the same treatment. By the way, Alex is now driving a Monaco, not
the Newell I last saw & reported yesterday.

I'm surprised by this failure. Those heavier tires are generally
considered much longer-lived. I was not very uncomfortable with the
Toyo tires on my 40' Safari when I sold it at 9 years.

Four years from now, GLW&CDR, I'll be changing my now <1 year old tires.

Y'All should be here -- GREAT supper! And desserts. For those
unfortunate enough to have never attended a Dixielanders rally: We're
the dessert-eatinest folks you ever saw. Even after everyone
apparently had at least one full plate of food, and another of
desserts, there's enough food & desserts left for lunch tomorrow. :-))

No wonder there's an obesity epidemic in Dixie. :-(

Shame, shame, shame on you.

it.

Ken,

I agree; the desserts at Bean Station were worth the trip from Sydney!

Oh oh, sure hope I don't kick off the "Dessert Wars!" ;-)

However, I must caution those of you who attend a Dixielander Rally for the
first time, stay away from the banana pudding until one particular
Dixielander has had his fill!
