GM owners are lucky in that in the early 80's???? the RPO ( Regular Production Option service parts) sticker went on the inside of the deck lid or inside the glove box etc. and you could see all the options. For example Code G80 is positraction, Code Z28 was special performance group on Camaro (hence the car name derived). Actually I guess GMC truck and coach started it earlier as my 77 TZE has the sticker in the glove box. (Interested to know if this goes all the way back to 73 TZEs.)
Anyway..... if you have say a Jeep TOAD (I have a 99 XJ) in Chrysler World there is no RPO sticker and I wondered about say what axle ratios I had. So if you type your VIN into this web site it instantly (not kidding for such a massive database) spits out a nice set of facts like build date, build plant, city of delivery, and then all the options and codes. For example I have the Classic package and the Tow package, HD cooling, and now I know I have 3.55 axles. Have fun....

Says right there on the page that it only goes back to 1980.

Actually, build sheets on some GM vehicles go back to about 1963 or 1964.
During those years, they could be found glued onto the back seat support.
Some were also found inside the trunk on the other side of the support.
Mostly they were unreadable after so many years. They also tried A pillar
and glove box doors and firewalls behind the glove box. They were frequently
coded and you had to know what the symbols and alphanumeric sequences
represented to tell for sure what you had from the factory. Those stickers
are of huge importance when trying to authenticate COPO cars, particulary
limited production high performance ones. Incidentally COPO stands for
Central Office Purchase Order, or special vehicles ordered at the request of
certain dealerships like Nickey Chevrolet, and Dick Landy Dodge. Some GMCs
were ordered with SOPs also. SOP means special option package, and has to do
with things like Thermasan, and 2 ACs, and chrome bumpers etc.

Cool. Yes it was more directed at TOADS and other toye. I too tryed the TZE and as it says, we are too old. James, I've found the build sheets in 70s GMs up under the dash or up under the seat springs (rear usually) The laminated labels (early 80s???) are nice as they put them where you can see them without digging. I was surprised to see the one in my 77 TZE glove box still stuck there. I just posted this to make people of non GM ( not sure how Ford does it) cars and trucks able to get that same info the sticker would have so easily by going on line..
