OK- I may the only person in the world to destroy 2 airbags in one year, but here goes:
The first was entirely my fault. As a newby I knew nothing about ride height or “airing up” and I allowed the tire to rub a hole in the bag. It happened in my first week of ownership.
Then last month I bought 2 new tires and put them in the center position. I left specific written instructions for the tire company to follow that would have discarded an out of date and cracked tire. They did not follow those instructions and instead they moved that tire from the center passenger side to the rear passenger side. Even though I checked tire pressure prior to my departure and prior to my return trip home, I did not bother to scrutinize their work and look closely for dates. Somewhat less my fault, but I should have looked.
The result is that on July 4, at expressway speed, I lost about 18” of tread from the rotten tire. I put the spare on myself and we proceeded home – about 200 miles. The next morning I noticed the coach was leaning to the right and learned that the passenger side bag was deflated. Further examination showed that the bag had been “slapped” by the steel cord of the missing piece of the tire and the result is a series of small pin prick leaks.
My wheel well cover – more than a “t” skirt, it is a full, one piece cover – has been ripped from its bottom connection and the back storage compartment door has damage along the bottom edge. Both are repairable.
I guess the point of this post is 3 fold:
1. Never trust repairs without verifying or observing the results. I’m not much of a mechanic, but I knew that tire was bad. That tire is the prime reason I bought the 2 new ones.
2. I’m frustrated with the options available to me for bag replacement. I’m borrowing a bag from a loyal GMCer and have a possibility of getting a used bag in a month or so. The fact remains that if I stay with the OEM system my options are limited to buying used bags. Correct me if I’m wrong. I’m open to suggestion but am leaning toward replacing the system with a more current and available system.
3. I’m not going to gamble on tires anymore. I have 4 tires that are in the 4 year old range, but that just might not be good enough to make me comfortable.
I hope the result of this exercise is that the dealer will make me “whole” which would be a good used bag, 2 in-date tires and a bit of fiberglass repair. I’d probably settle for 2 new tires and I’ll probably buy 2 more so I’ll have 6 new.
Film at 11.

Stick,
If you need a used bag -- I have one in the mini storage I can send USPS priority -- be there on Thursday. The fiil valve is not with it -- you would use the one from your old bag. This one is a little rough looking, but was holding air ok according to the PO.

Tom - that is probably the plan. I just want to feel safe traveling until then. Good thing I didn't remember to sign up for the Dixielander rally. I wouldn't have made it.

It amazes me on how few tire monkeys even know there is a date code on tires, much less how to read them. Even if they know, most do not understand why we do not want old tires on our coaches.
Any chance you can take your coach back and rub their noses in it? (I doubt it would help...)
I replaced a "perfectly good" tire the other day... with a date code of [495]. (It was the spare on a recently bought 96 Sidekick, so I am thinking 49th week of 1995.)
The tire monkey seemed confused on why I did not want the tire... even as a spare.
Anyway, double check the tire monkeys work.... it is YOUR rig.
To make that easier, I need to start insisting that the tires be mounted with the date codes on the OUTSIDE.

Harry wrote on Tue, 12 July 2011 09:54 | With 3 digits in the tire build code, I think it would be 4th month of '95. Not that it matters with something that old. It has only been in the last few years that they went to 4 digits in the build code.
|
Tire date codes have always indicated the week of manufacture. (Never the month.)
Before 2000, they only provided the week of the year and the last digit of the year... but had no way of indicating what DECADE the tire was manufactured. [495] could mean November 1995 but could also mean November in 1985, 1975 or even 1965. But the tire size and construction wasn't made that far back and it wan mounted on a wheel that wasn't being used until the 1996 model year. I am fairly sure it was made in 1995.
Here is a fairly good site on tire date codes:
<http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=11>
But, you are correct, any tire with only three digits is to old for most "on road" uses. (Keep in mind that tire age is only one of many things to consider when judging a tires fitness for use.)

Thanks for the responses and for the offers to lend bags. I did go back to the tire company and I just got a call from the owner offering 2 new Uniroyals to match the 2 I bought last month.
That offer is satisfactory to me especially since there are probably some companies who would not have done anything.
Kudos to Dave Perry at Perry Brothers Tire here in Americus, Georgia. They messed up, admitted their mistake and, IMHO, they made it right.
Got to order some Counteract.

Good deal, Stick! I'm glad they're treating you right. Especially
since we need as many good sources as we can get. :-)
I may still have some Counteract, in case you can't find a source.

Stick-
Have you looked at the Southland Single Cone sytem? It looks like you could replace one side at a time (although opinions on this differ) and they are in GA.

I think the single cone (and JimK sells one too for a little less, I forgot to mention) is the simplest and the best value. The Q-bag claims to be able to carry the coach along with a blown tire, but I wonder how much value that really has, given the number of variables associated with a flat. Are you really likely to just keep on truckin'? But you can install a single cone in under an hour and you have safety, peace of mind and just about all the OEM travel.
I was about to pull the trigger on one, but we shelved out trip plans for a couple months, so I'll wait until we get closer to a departure date.

Yes, it does. I had a feeling they would make it right. They are an old, family owned company with a good reputation in our community. They support some pretty good causes and generally are good guys. Their employee made a mistake and they were willing to make things right.
I do think it is important for me to say that I am not a fan of trivial legal proceedings. All I wanted was to be put back in approximately the same position I was in before the incident. Had they chosen not to help, I would have reinforced my feelings to the owner and dropped the matter. I would never have traded with them again, but that would be it. As it is, I am satisfied with their offer. I'll buy 2 more tires from them in the spring.
