All points considered, I think I'm just going to order in an exhaust and bolt it up and be done with it.

Thanks for the tips and the suggestions.

This was discussed with Martha's possum rescue plan. You can build a set but then you end up needing to eventually build a real exhaust, so all the time cobbling something up is wasted. Better to just break down and do it right in the first place. It really does not take all that long. You could use standard NAPA 2.5" pipe and standard bends to do what you have to. I'm not sure how you connect to the manifold, though.

Dolph,

If you are doing this at a distance from home and the coach has no existing system -- are you familiar with the silicone donuts that most GMC exhaust systems used to support the ling exhaust pipe? (very early 73 coaches used a different system) The donuts may or may not need replacing.

You hit the nail on the head, and I'm not familiar with them.

Where's the best place to get smart about it?

Dolph,

Do you have a parts manual? If not, go here

http://www.bdub.net/manuals/parts/GMCMH-Parts.pdf

look under fuel, section 12.030 for the exhaust system. it has illustrations of the first style and the later style with the silicone donuts. The original pipes were 2 1/2 inch and went through a short section of 3 inch that fit through the silicone donuts.

You don't say whether you plan to use the original exhaust manifolds or go to headers, or if you want a 3 inch exhaust system or to stay with the original 2 1/2 inch.

Go here to see what JimK has to offer and of course if you buy from him he has the other bits you may need..

http://appliedgmc.com/level.itml/icOid/488

Gene has some info to read..

http://gmcmotorhome.info/engine.html#manifold

and visit the photo site and search for exhaust to get lots of ideas..

http://gmcmhphotos.com/photos/

So, you have a lot to look over and study.
When you come back, tell us more about the coach, and what you may need to do -- then we may be better able to advise you.

Dennis

Dan,

As I recall you want to add a donut at the front (under the entry door area) -- which would require seperating the exhaust pipe. Do you still have the metal mounting ring? We have discussed -- on the forum -- the idea of splitting the mounting and the donut. But I don't know if anyone has ever done so. Sure would make it easier to install one after the exhaust was is place.

Oh, and one more link to an exhaust system -- and billet silicone mounting rings.

Dennis, I had this very discussion with Jim K. at Patterson. He seemed to think it could be split and installed. No one has mentioned doing so yet. Maybe I will be the first so I can report back to the group.

Dan,

I would split the metal into two halves but just cut the silicone in one
place. You can wrap the silicone around the pipe with the slit at 12:00 and
put the metal over it and slide it into place up against the frame member.

I just changed the oil and had a good look at mine. There is a donut in the second cross frame member but not one in the first. Teri complains about the "thumping" that the pipe does, sometimes, when I start it up. I have Jim's 3 inch pipes with the band clamps. I believe that I can slide one on and bolt it up with out cutting it in half. There is a clamp in front and one behind this first cross member. So, I kinda hate to cut one if I don't need to. What you say Rob makes all the sense in the world about only cutting the gasket once and the frame for it twice.
Many times folks come up to Jim's table, pick one of these up, and ask what it is. My response is that they are getting a firsthand look at one of the new muffler bearings. So, if you need one at Goshen, just ask for a "muffler bearing". This will get you one of these.

Dan,

The y pipe parralels that crossmember so closely that when it bends through there is not a not of room to have a mounting. Can you enlarge the opening slightly to improve clearance?

Really? So, there should not be one on the most forward cross frame, but the second only? It does not rattle all of the time, just occassionally.

Dan,

Correct, originally the mounts are at the second crossmember.

Perhaps you would be better served with a flexible exhaust piece in the Y pipe. Adding more rigidity to your existing system might cause some problems.
Here is the link again -- showing a flex connection..
