Lots of interesting discussion, but.... 7 years old doesn't seem to me to be old-old, just old. Should you automatically throw away a 7-year-old tire? And that brings up a question that I don't remember being discussed, and that is how to inspect the tire in order to predict impendin doom. I've still got a couple of old tires on mine (well, even the newer ones aren't all that new :-(. I inspect them pretty often, certainly before each trip, and look for cracks mostly at the edge of the belt. The one that had what I thought were suspicious cracks started to make noise and it felt like it was going out of round. Sure enough, when I got back home (not too far) it was showing a bulge in the belt area and the cracks had gotten much bigger. So that was a "save". Is there a good way to inspect the tires?

'73 23' still with 2 16.5's (anybody got a couple of Alcoa's?)
From Ken:
Maybe so, but I'll bet Stick Miller won't agree. Two weeks ago he was
ready to replace two of his tires. We checked the date codes on all
his tires and chose the oldest, dated 2004 (20th week of 2004) for
scrapping. Last week he took the coach on a trip and threw the tread
of the passenger side rear tire. Which turned out to be THAT tire!
The dealer scrapped a newer tire and left that one, which I personally
heard Stick tell him to discard, on the coach.
In a way, Stick was lucky: He was able to stop with air still in the
tire so it did only minor damage to his fender flare, the LPG
compartment door, and the air bag, which was apparently punctured in
at least two places by the thrown steel belt.
