Who "owns" the Yahoo GMC motorhome group at
http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/gmcmotorhome/messages

It seems to be totally inhabited by spam and porn advertising. Should it
be shut down by the owner, or is there a way to clean it up?

This is what usually happens with abandoned yahoo groups. If you can find
the owner, it is salvagable. If not, yahoo will do nothing to help in my
experience.

I sent a note to the list owner. Will be interesting to see
if he replies.

Yahoo groups was very popular around the turn of the
century/millennium. With the popularity of other areas on the net now
a lot of the yahoo groups are falling into the hands of bots/spam and
such. People who use some yahoo groups can stop spam by locking their
groups down with the approve subscriber button, and by moderation. I
still do this with the (WARNING MENTION OF ANOTHER BRAND) Mobile
Traveler yahoo group. Its an old group but still used by people and I
try to keep the worthless posts off of that list. Many still find it
to be a useful place to discuss brand X campers. (GRIN)
I created that list as there was no other place that described that
make at all on the net.

They are totally useless when it comes to that. When I was a broadcaster I had a fan set up a mailing list as a sort of "fan club." It's been a long time since they did that and I can't find the owner. I told Yahoo that I wanted it gone since it is has my name in the title and they just didn't get it at all. It looked like I'd have to get a lawyer to get anything done so I blew it off. I just joined and sent a message to everyone telling them what happened and never went back. I'll never set up anything on Yahoo.

The same goes for corporate yahoo domains. I took over a company 5 years ago, and the employee who originally set up the website and domain was long gone. I had to track him down and knock on his door to get his password to change it. Yahoo didn't care that this was our livelihood that was at stake.

I recently acquired another domain for my current business and worked with the owner and GoDaddy to switch it over. He didn't remember anything, was computer illiterate, so I had to do all the password resets and such using his email and having him forward me the links and such from GoDaddy, Seems there is little else you can do.

The group was owned by Arch. He has had nothing to do with
it in 5 years, since he had his stroke. He does not recall
his ID or password, so there appears no way to transfer
ownership or delete it.

Patrick,

A note of thanks to you for keeping a watchful eye on our happy home.

For the hell of it I scrolled through the messages and it appears all was
well until March 2, 2011 when a message came in under Howard Nylander's
email noting he was stuck in London without any money. IIRC that message got
sent into the GMCnet too.

From that point onwards a number of scams got posted and then on April 27,
2011 lenteja.atomica sent in the first sex posting and that was that. Later
another sex poster hannahlu started in sending the same stuff so I suspect
that was lenteja.atomica also.

I'll bet we could guess Arch's user ID, but a password reset message would
have to go to his then-current email address. Is anyone talking to Arch to
check whether he's still got that and would be willing & able to cooperate
in regaining control of the site?

The GMC content stops at about message #810, so if you're looking for
something, look in lower numbered messages.

The group owner is
Richard Archer
Yahoo id appears to be "archfree"

and a moderator is Dave Hillsdorf
A62dave@yahoo.com

A mod should be able to lock down the group.

...and I just resurrected his account. His login is indeed archfree.
It hadn't been logged into in forever, so Yahoo had mothballed it. I
pinged it, and the process can take a bit for it to come back. Then he
can either try to guess his password, or reset it in accordance with
the usual process.

"Success, you will be able to use your Yahoo! account shortly
We have initiated the re-activation process for your Yahoo! account.
We have started the re-activation of your Yahoo! account though some
of your old data might not be recoverable.

Note: Re-activations can take up to 24 hours so we recommend that you
try to sign in to Yahoo! after 24 hours. If you cannot sign in after 24
hours, you can select "I can't access my account" from the sign in
page to reset your password."

I'm not willing to do more than that without some sort of go ahead.
People that know him better can try to help him access his account.

You're welcome Rob! IIRC, Howard's email came thru the email listserver, but
IIRC, his Yahoo(again!) account was compromised. The others you mention
originated with the Forum and didn't make it thru the listserver. The first
time a valid user posts to the Forum, I receive a "bounce" notice(only
subscribers can post), approve the post and add them to the list with "no mail"
setting. Bogus forum users don't get added to the email list.

"Spoofing" a valid subscriber's email address is one way to get past the filter,
but that doesn't seem to happen very often. It has happened on a couple other
lists that I subscribe to, but I don't think it's ever happened to GMCnet.

I dispose of prob'ly around 50 spam, phishing and virus emails caught in the
list filter every day. Fortunately mailman has a bulk function and I can pick
out the valid emails and dump the rest. Only takes a minute or two at a sitting
- otherwise I'd be crazier than I already am...

That's sorta like my Hotmail account. I have my inbound
set at "Exclusive" which means that only senders that are
in my address book or that I have added to an "OK" list
get their postings to my inbox. The rest are trapped in
the "Junk" folder. When new messages are added to
either the Inbox or Junkbox, the quantity of those show
up in a table of ALL my folders. Easy to go to the Junkbox
and check which I want to accept and report the remainder
as PHISHING to Microsoft.

I had totally forgotten about that Yahoo group. Was it really Arch who set it up?

If you all think that someone is using the Yahoo GMC group to send out a bunch of unsolicited sex stuff, try posting something for sale on Craigslist.

Unbelievable what you'll end up getting in your mail box.

After having yesterday looked at the Yahoo! GMC Group, this morning I had a
"Social Engineering" phishing email, threatening to terminate my Yahoo!
email account unless I provided my address, password, etc. GMail trapped it
as from a spoofed address and flashed a big red warning message.

Be careful out there!

Commodore Archer may have intended to use the site as a combo for the Great Cardboard Boat Ralley and the GMC motor home... He was heavily involved in both at one time.

Yahoo has changed since being bought out.
They have gotton too big. This happens when you grow and do not make provision to supervise all the satelite divisions. I think DISNEY has been going through this for a few years now.

Yahoos desire for money took a back spin in the Yahoo Games site where you can buy a game and be activated on line. Now you own the game, at least for as long as Yahoo is interested in keeping it alive. You lose your money and the game when Yahoo stops offering the game and no longer will activate. They will not refund either. Beware of Yahoo Gaming
