Upon inspecting my newly-purchased distributor,
I checked for play of the shaft. There is maybe
1/16 inch of vertical play on the shaft; no trace
of any side-to-side wobble.

I feel that is probably a normal amount of play
to expect when the distributor is installed.

Any comments?

The maching of the aluminum body looks VERY nice!

So long as the cam is driving it, it will go to the end of that play because of the bevel of the drive gear and stay there.  Won't matter unless or until it moves the rotor so far up or down it (the rotor) either hits something or the center contact pulls away from the fixed HV feed.  Which in each instance would take maybe half an inch of endplay.  That shaft isn't ever gonna see 2500 RPM, I wouldn't worry over a 16th of end play.

Bud had a '39 Binnisman's Coupe flathead, with the 'beehive' on the front.  We went to 10:1 with offenhauser aluminum heads, and a manifold with two Stromber 97s on.  My first experience with hotrods.  'Bout halfway through the season at the old Montgomery Dragway, he missed a shift and lunched the mill all over the right lane.  Tachs didn't have telltales - or at least ours didn't.. but we found out, there >is< a limit to how fast you can spin one before it fails a rod.

I remember watching a hemi-engined dragster
come apart at a dragstrip near Fredonia or
Dunkirk, NY back in the late 50's. Quite a
sight, to say the least. Watched Art Arfrons'
Baloney Slicer run many sessions at the old
Wattsburg (PA) dragstrip just a few miles
south of Erie, PA. That's also where I holed
the side of a piston in the aforementioned
50 Ford Convertible!

Ha ha..flathead Fords. I love them. 239 cubic inches of screaming nothing. 85 HP downhill. The Merc 4" crank added another 10HP if you were lucky.

239.4 cu. in., if I recall. The Merc mill with the 4"
stroke came in at 255.1; again from long ago memory.

The '49 and later 239s were rated at 100 HP and the
Merc 255s at 110.

Speedo on my '50 went to 100. I saw the needle midway
in the gap between 100 and ZERO. My brother told me
(when I was away at college for junior year) he put
the speedo all the way past zero on the second time
around up on the New York Thruway west of Buffalo.

I had a 4.10 or 4.11 axle with the electric overdrive.
I could beat the stovebolt Chevies of the day on top
end, but the torque of the straight six generally was
enough to win a 1/4 mile drag. I think I was running
in E-Stock back in those days! A bit under 20 seconds
and around 70 mph in the 1/4 mile.

I miss it, bracket racing does nothing for me.  Run what ya brung; when the tree comes down one of us goes to the next pair and one of us reconnects the mufflers and drives it on home.  Any more, like pretty much all forms of racing, it's cubic money.

(when I was away at college for junior year) he put
the speedo all the way past zero on the second time
around up on the New York Thruway west of Buffalo.

I had a 4.10 or 4.11 axle with the electric overdrive.
I could beat the stovebolt Chevies of the day on top
end, but the torque of the straight six generally was
enough to win a 1/4 mile drag. I think I was running
in E-Stock back in those days! A bit under 20 seconds
and around 70 mph in the 1/4 mile.

Four of us GMCers ran 27.03, 28.43, 21.88 & 22.08 sec. this last March when we held a dry camping rally at the Orlando Speed World. This was done with all of the camping gear. After all
this was a weekend long rally with "Momma" on board.

G'day,

Well if it was 272.03 MPH that's REALLY impressive, but if it's seconds
(4.53 minutes) that's pretty slow. Was it being pushed by the towd or
people? ;-)

I for one can't see the point in drag racing a fully equipped GMC.

I'm not that concerned about the engine or final drive. However, the
transmission, while beefy, probably takes a real hammering when it shifts
under max acceleration.

I have run Double Trouble flat out pedal to the metal and the best she would
do was 86 MPH on a flat and level road.

I can see the point in going for the Land Speed Record with a fully equipped
GMC as Moe was gutted.

When it comes to motorized vehicles, boys will ALWAYS be boys
and want to "open her up and find out what she'll do."

I suspect the first elapsed time was either 27.20, 27.23, or
maybe even 22.03 seconds. I see two times were close to 22
seconds flat and one that was 28.43 (what a dog!).

The guy who said my 1950 Ford Convertible was faster was right!
It had an engine rated at 100 hp driving almost 4,000 pounds.

It was because we could. I edited the first time to 27.03.
Just my fat finger screwing up.

That Friday nite was "run what 'ca brung" for $5 a pass.
I felt like I was 16 again. ... and ANNIE never missed a shift.
I'm looking forward to a rematch next March.

He was in a rush to get to Amana Colonies, Iowa when he did this. I never found out what his rush was. It may have been to get out of paying the out of sight tolls in Illinois.

That play is well within tolerance. Not all deck heights are the same and
that dimension compensates for that.
