Depends on what you call "normal."
The one gallon an hour many state is for a fairly heavy load. (In the upper amount the 6k can produce.... 4 to 5k) Reduce the load and the consumption should go down.
Keep in mind it is a FLAT HEAD motor they just are not as good on gas as a more modern motor.... but these old heavy generators are almost bullet proof... it you do not "hit" the control board!
