Sometimes you just got to admit how stupid you were. The Onan flywheel comes off quite easy...really!
I made a really nice puller plate for the flywheel. Slotted holes the works, it fits perfectly. Then I welded a 3/4" nut to the center and my big hex bolt went through the threads ever so smoothly. Then I thought...why take a chance marring up the end of the crank shaft. I cut a 1 1/2' plug out of a sheet of .25 plate. Only one problem...the plug contacts the flywheel in the recess...not the crankshaft. Even a Marine can figure out that something just is not right. When I put the bolt on the lathe and beveled the edge so that it would mate to the end of the crankshaft and got rid of the plug...pop goes the flywheel. Lesson learned...make tools that work.

Glen,
My two favorite Marine stories:
One of my best friends joined the Marines upon HS graduation; I joined the
Air Force. We met after basic training and he said to me; "you're not in the
military, you're just an organized civilian!" When I got to Viet Nam and saw
what the Marines and Army went through compared to us "fly-boys" I saw he
was right. Unfortunately he did not make it home from Viet Nam along with a
few other classmates.
On my return from Viet Nam I flew through San Francisco and as I was walking
through the terminal in my Class A "Blue" uniform there were a several young
Marines in their Class A "Green" uniform.
They said to me "Hey bus driver, when's the bus pulling out?" accompanied by
much laughter.
I responded "As soon as you porters get the baggage loaded!" laughter ceased
and I kept walking.

This deserves a reply. I have often heard that our uniformed services are
organized as follows:
Deep water yacht club....Navy
Shallow water yacht club...Coast Guard
National Aero Club...Air Force
Uniformed Adults with Weapons but no ammunition...Army
A force at the ready on land...air...sea and if you listen to the Marine
Hymn even guarding the very gates of heaven...The Marines
The above is in good humor. Tis far more important that a person served
their country then in which branch they elected to serve.

Jim,
Actually, no...I've always thought the Guard/Reserves to be a part of the
larger active duty contingent. I think in today's military that's even more
true as we rely so heavily upon these great folks to add depth to the active
duty military. Without our Guard and Reserves our ability to fill the
famous quote "rugged men ready to do violence" would be impossible to carry
out on as many fronts as we are engaged. I seldom make any light of the
Guard and Reserve as in my eyes these folks that walk away from jobs and
family to fill a call to duty are of a caliber above and beyond.

Amen. I can't believe the sacrifices the "weekend warriors" are
called upon to make. Especially when I remember that my uncle
"forced" me to join the National Guard the day before I turned 18-1/2
to keep me out of the draft. That was my college deferment. I quit
college at the start of my senior year to join USAF for 23 more years
of the military.
We should bring back the draft to spread the load of our defense to
all classes of society, to give more youths the opportunity to mature,
and to relieve the load on the weekend warriors.
JMHO, even if out of place.

I do NOT wish to see the draft returned. The spreading of the load
across a wider spectrum of the population seems on the surface to be
a good idea. However, the highly technical demands of today's
military services (ALL of them) are so advanced that folks that at
one time were labeled Category 5 simply cannot cut the mustard. They
would be more of a hazard to their comrades than to any enemy.

At the start of WWII, shoes were hi-tech to more than a few draftees.
The Army trained them and made good use of them. Military training
methods may be the only way to educate many of today's youth, making
them productive members of society, and it CAN be done.
But this is the wrong forum for this discussion. My apologies for
initiating and continuing it.

I am a formally active regular Marine and I have always liked Eleanor Roosevelt quote “The Marines I have seen around the world have the cleanest bodies, the filthiest minds, the highest morale, and the lowest morals of any group of animals I have ever seen. Thank God for the United States Marine Corps!”

Soapbox open.
I'll second that, with some upgrades. Do away with the 'equivalent wage' for the first two years in. Beer money, three hots and a cot, and teach the kids a trade and the concepts of maturity and responsibility. And ELIMNATE DEFERRMENTS. For anything. Opposed to killing? Fine, there are plenty of public projects for you to go and work on in a military environment. Handicapped? Fine, we'll spend a bit extra to let you do something you're capable of doing. I realize it's a Heinleinesque concept, but I think it would work and we'd be better off for it.

Amen. I can't believe the sacrifices the "weekend warriors" are
called upon to make. Especially when I remember that my uncle
"forced" me to join the National Guard the day before I turned 18-1/2
to keep me out of the draft. That was my college deferment. I quit
college at the start of my senior year to join USAF for 23 more years
of the military.
We should bring back the draft to spread the load of our defense to
all classes of society, to give more youths the opportunity to mature,
and to relieve the load on the weekend warriors.
JMHO, even if out of place.
