All,
The alternator belt on the coach broke last night. The PO has a large
selection of spares, GMC, Dayco, Gates, Goodyear and others all marked as
alt, ps, and ac. I swapped out the belt with a GMC belt, fired up the coach
and the belt promptly overheated, flipped over and fried. I have never seen
that before, ever.
All I have locally is a Kragen and Auto Zone and I need to get the coach
ready for our son and wife as they are taking it to the beach next weekend.
It is a standard 403.
Can anyone point me in the right direction as what belts to use? I thought
I had a cross reference guide in the coach...somewhere.
Thanks,
Len and Pat

Tension is more important than worrying about the width.
They are all going thin to save them money.
You need to retighten them or put it on the very tight tension.
Exuse my Enguish, I had one heck of a time passing the English
proficincy test in Oklahoma before I could graduate in Aero/ Space
Engineering.

The reason why yoiu need to purchase two belts at the same time is to
maintain the same length.
All tha manufactures will telll you that they make every batch the same.

I used to run a Ford Flathead with a McCullough Supercharger that was driven
with 3 V belts. I tried to run it by using over the counter v belts with the
same number. It would eat belts like popcorn. I finally went to our local
mill supply co., and they ordered me some morse power transmission belts, a
matched set. They were not cheap, but that ended my belt problems. The
quality belts are out there, they just require some research, and they are
not inexpensive. The alternators and AC compressors on our GMCs are both
very close to the load requirement where two belts are necessary. If
anything is at all wrong with your setup, you will have trouble with belt
life.

As Emery stated earlier,
Check the width of the belts.
AutoZone, Goodyear, and Kelly Springfield belts are the correct width.
I had a fellow stop by here a few years back to have two new windshields installed. He was enroute from Dallas to Philadelphia. He told me he was loosing one NAPA alternator belt every 300 to 400 miles. I ran over to Autozone and got him a correct 7/16" width belt. We installed it while they were putting in the windshields. He never lost another belt all the way home and for the next two years or so of use of the coach. I lost track of the coach after he sold it about two years later.
Check the belt with with a 10 MM open end wrench. If it goes over the belt then it is too thin. Gates / NAPA is the only one I know of that quit making 7/16" belts and substituted 3/8" ones but there may be others.

I finally got the belts done. I used Durolast 17450 for the power steering
and 15573 for the alternator. The belt for the a/c, 15600 (they said it
would fit, well the computer did) was not even close. The belt they ordered
in for the a/c, 15620 was too narrow, did not pass the 10mm wrench test.
Most of the collection of belts that came with the coach will get trashed.
They have numbers that don't match to anything including the GM belts in
original wrappers. Some of the other belts have the correct GM number on
them, those I'll keep.
As suggested, the alternator was fried so I replaced it with a 100 amp with
a lifetime warranty.
Thanks to all that chimed in. Next project, CV boots.
Cheers,

All,
The alternator belt on the coach broke last night.
Thanks,
Len and Pat

I am tempted to try the same series belts I use on my lawnmowers. They're basically power transmission belts, and last forever under heavy service. They're also expensive. ANyone tried them? Available at Lowe's or your friendlty yard equipment dealer, house branded by MTD usually. Dunno who makes them. MTD had a website to buy their stuff also.

We cary over 500 of these type of belts for our air filter
cstomers,But they have a different angle cut on them.
I myself have never resorted to using them as I was told they do not work.
Worth a try.

We going to be in Oklahoma this Spring for the GMC International Convention.
Now, you be kind to those folks there as we know lot of them these
folks don yonder.
I'm sure Roger Black will make sure I receive second helpings of
Gritts every morning and also be bumming off his cigeretts.
If there is a football game at OU, Glen willneed to donate a tickt to me.
