OK. This is a shameless plug in behalf of John Shotwell but please read on.

When Shot took over the GMC Registry I asked him several questions. One of
them had to do with funding to pay for the domain and web hosting. While it
isn't a big amount it does take a few dollars every month. Lately, he's also
been spending a lot of time updating things and checking against other
records. Tonight he mentioned that there have been a lot of new entries even
since May when he assumed command.

So, here's the plug. How about sending him $5 or $10 as an Independence Day
thank you gift. It's easy. Follow this URL:
http://www.gmcmhregistry.com/Donate.html

I've already made my contribution.

One thing he's working on doing is checking the registry list against some
of the club memberships. After all, everyone who has or has had a GMC needs
to be in a local club or two. It's the GMCer way and no GMC is an island.

One thing we were amazed about at Patterson, LA was that a couple was
present who owned their GMC since 1977 and have never heard of GMCMI or the
Registry. Imagine that. Well, they said they'd definitely be back because
it's just fun.

Byron,

Thanks for the support, and the donation. That makes you the first one.

The Registry contains an enormous amount of information that Dave collected over the years. And as you said, I'm in the process of verifying as much of it as I can using GMC club's current rosters. I've been comparing the GMC MI roster for about four weeks now (over 1,300 entries) and will start on the other clubs when this one is done. The Registry stands at 8,149 entries as of today, an increase of 66 since I acquired the Registry on May 1st.

The biggest problem with any data base like this is keeping the data current. It would help a lot if new owners would go to the web site and fill out the on-line form, and previous owners would send a note to me saying that they sold their coach (that probably doesn't happen because, as we all know, that's their 2nd happiest day, and they forget).

So folks, please keep those cards and letters coming - No, I don't have pictures to show, tool sets to give away, or interaction between forum members - just remember, there are a number of us that do these kinds of things because we want to, and it helps to keep the GMC spirit alive, and that's fine.

Thanks again Byron, I appreciate it!

John,

I hope you're not doing all that manually. It will take a lot of
manual clean-up, certainly, but you should be able to do a large
percentage of the name-matching by computer.

My computer skills have deteriorated seriously over the past few years
(really since I sold my computer business in '93), but there are lots
of folks here who could give you some good tips as to how to do some
of it with modern tools.

Ken,

You've opened the door for me to be critical. From what I understand the
Registry information is housed in an Access database. Access, in my opinion,
is not exactly user friendly. I'd like to get my hands on the data but know
better than to offer. Besides, John is probably learning a lot as he combs
through it all.

But, you're correct, there are ways to compare sets of data. The biggest
problem, realistically, is that the multiple sets to compare are probably
not well normalized. A computer can only deal with normalized data. Humans,
however, still have a certain level of intelligence (on good days).

OK. Enough with the technical aspects of computer software.
