Leaks can be difficult to properly repair. The first thing you will want to do is verify as precisely as possible where the leak is. Best to run a hose on the roof so water flows over suspect seams while looking from the inside with all interior and insulaion out of the way with GOOD light (and a cold beer). Once you are sure it is entering the vent seal(and not a cracked lid) I would remove the screws (or rivits) from the vents and remove them. Clean the non hardening adhesive sealant from the roof and the vents and install fresh ribbon caulk between roof and vent. You will probably see where the water has snuck in after removal. Autobody supply or some auto part stores carry it in a roll. It is used to seal bolt in automotive glass as well as taillights. If screws are used to re-secure the vent, a little butyl around the screw prior to insertion will seal the hole. If you are using non closed end rivits, some oil based siding and window caulk in the mandrel hole or even ov
er the whole rivit head(nobody will see it anyway if you use matching color). The vents are really inexpensive to replace but if the hole pattern is different you have just added more potential entry points by re-drilling. When I pulled mine there was already two sets of holes

we had a heavy rain the day before i replaced my trim piece. i replaced it because i called fantastic fans since my dome cover did not close automaticially . i thought maybe a little control board, they sent me new cover assembly with all new switches, pcb, screen which pops on not screwed on, and inside trim. when i removed the inside trim the seapage was felt on my roof liner. i assume leak was already there, really seapage not leak, the fantastic fan people are great, fan now works great.
by looking on roof, it seams some one has covered all holes and etc with what looks like clear silicone, and if i look closly around fan assembly i can see a couple small cracks in this silicone. i am hoping to remove silicone and just reseal, with my luck, if i completely break seal to clean off all the old black tape stuff is that i will go from seapage to full blown leak. i have used that black tape to reseal a windshield a few years back, and i may still have a little. i am just not sure if adding it would be bette than adding caulk,
thanks bgk
