I changed the pump and cleaned the carb. The generator started right up but would just barely pull both AC's (110V). So I adjusted the leakage. Not knowing how to do it a increase the tension on the spring then adjusted the carb leakage until I had 126 volts as per the manual. Well surprise when I turned on one AC, the voltage went up to 128V (12amps load). I then turned on the second AC an the voltage dropped to 122(25 amps). I then turned on the hot water heater 120V(37 amps). I then adjusted it again. It runs at 121V(12amps), 118V(25amps) and 114V(37amps). Is this about right setting???
I only have a 40 amp breaker so I will not run at 37 amps for more than short times. The 50 amp breaker would not handle 37 amps so I changed it. The generator has been running for 3 hours with a 25 amp load.

Art,
Looks good to me, however, I wouldn't worry about running at 37 amps. At 114
volts that works out to 4218 watts, well within the Onan's capability.
However, it might be a good idea to check the Hz too.

I like the first numbers that you had before readjusting it. If 126 is ideal then the closer you are to 126, the better. It will also run fine with the last set of numbers. I'm just a perfectionist. I always adjust them with a frequency meter trying to stay as close to 60 cycle as possible. I believe in an Onan 60 cycle equates to your 126 volt figure.
When we did power checks for large computer systems the spec was was always anything +10% to -5% was OK. Of course in those checks the frequency never varied. The power companies were always right on a 60 cycles.

One of my meters has a freq. setting. But if you don't have that option,,,,heres how. Find a stop watch and an electric clock with a sweep second hand. Not digital. Start both at the same time while the generator is a runnin. If your sweep second hand goes around once in 60 seconds you're good. If not adjust the speed of the onan. Would be more accurate if you used 2 or 3 min. I've tried it and it works well,,,,,,PL

well I had a shock today when I started up the generator. I showed 130volts with 12.5 Amps. My house power was off so I ran the generator for 5 hours.
I adjust the spring tension until it read 122 volts and it held for the 10 minutes or so I watched it and it held voltage. About two hours later it was reading 112 volts. I then increased the tension until the voltage was 119 and it stayed that way. My problem is the amount I had to increase the tension was more than I took off when I slowed it down the first time. I guess I need a new spring or is this normal as the spring gets hot it changes. The generator ran for about 5 hours. It was pulled out.
As far as the 37 amps being a problem I only have a 40 amp circuit breaker. The 50 went bad an I replaced it with a 40.
