Hey George
Ive been looking at That Bully Dog rapid ATF it looks like it might be a good high pressure lubricant. A little pricey but might be worth the extra. I know people swear by Amsoil and i use it in my motorcycle but im not sure of the ATF ROI versus cost for that brand.

George,
Manny recommends Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF.
You can get it at Advance Auto.
It ain't cheap!
It is fully compatible with non-synthetics but it will take you a couple of
changes to get rid of all the "old stuff"
I put it in Double Trouble when we dropped the trans to install a new final
drive and dumped out the torque converter.
Below is Larry Weidner's procedure to drain the fluid completely.

Rob,
You can take it to a "jiffy Lube" type place to have them change the fluid,
and to my way of thinking that is the only way to *completely* change all of
the fluid, as long as you have the filter changed also. The only catch is,
the last couple of times I stopped at a "jiffy lube" type place, they were
*not* offering synthetic fluids as a change option. So you may have to make
a sort of deal with the owner/manager to use synthetic fluid. That being
said, you can get most of the oil out using the following procedure. Keep
in mind, there are several...perhaps many... that would not do this.
(including IIRC Manny) I've done it many times with no ill results.
Sooooooo.....
This is a very messy procedure...you're gonna spill fluid, so be prepared
with Oil dry, rags and the like to clean-up afterwards.
1. Do this with the trans cold. Wait at least over night.
2. Raise the coach high enough to get a 5 gal pail under it with room to
spare.
3. Disconnect both trans lines at the radiator, and be prepared to catch the
fluid coming out of the cooler in the radiator.
4. Attach hose extensions to the lines and drop the lines into the 5 gal
pail.
5. Using two people, start the motor for only couple of seconds. Do this to
identify which line the fluid will come out of. Now you know which line you
*must* keep in the bucket.
6. Again, using two people, (one to run the motor, the other to watch the
fluid) start the motor.
7. Run the motor until the fluid line begins spurting air. Shut motor off
immediately!! The fluid will get quite frothy.
8. Allow to stand without the motor running for 4-5 minutes. This will let
excess fluid in the trans drain down into the pan.
9. Start the motor again for no more than 5 seconds. Shut off the motor,
this will pump out that last little bit in the pan and make dropping the pan
a lot less messy.
10. Let the oil lines drip into the pail while you drop the trans pan.
11. Drop the trans pan, and replace the filter using two (2) "O" rings at
the filter.
12. Hook up the two trans lines to the oil cooler at the radiator.
13. Fill the trans with about 7 qts of trans fluid.
14, Start the motor and allow to idle for about a 30 seconds or so before
checking fluid level.
15. Check fluid level and add accordingly.
16. Once full, drive until normal operating temp is reached, and recheck
fluid level. Add fluid to bring to "Full".
I've used this procedure on every auto trans that I've owned
for....well....forever.
This is just the way I do it....your mileage may vary.
Just my relatively informed, off the cuff, back yard mechanic, gut level,
eyeball it up and guesstimate, way of doing things....that's all...

I do same but...
If it's been sitting over night, I run the vehicle just for 30 seconds or so to insure the trans parts are not "dry". Fluid wont get hot in that short time. Might not be necessary but makes sense in my mind.
I made an elbow pipe from off the shelf brake line with the correct end allready on it. Then you only have to disconnect the return line from the radiator (high location I believe on the last GM I worked on)and screw the hard brake line to the radiator. This gives a firmer setup that won't whip around. You can add some hose to the end but I'd keep it short. And as mentioned the pump pumps it out fast like....... thoughbred horse P... I mean fast. So be ready to shut er down. After this is done you can drop the feed line to the radiator to drain the cooler of the last of it, but with less mess.

Thanks. Going to use Mobil 1 with a coupon. Still expensive.
I'm afraid it's just a matter of time before I place an order with Manny. Fluid that came out was dark and had a smell to it. Just hoping to make it for a couple more months.

Five years and 7500 miles and the fluid is discolored, hmmm you're right
that don't sound good!
On Double Trouble I found:
1) The speedo bullet and plastic gear leaking - changed the O-ring on the
bullet but couldn't do anything about the plastic gear, there's no seal on
it. It has a spiral that is cut in such a way so that when it rotates it
"pulls" the oil back into the bullet. The fit on mine was too sloppy and
that didn't work.
2) The shift lever shaft leaked - it tried to change it but IIRC it's held
in with a roll pin and I screwed it up trying to get it out and that was
that.
3) Pan Gasket - sealed it with Aviation Permatex and that seemed to help but
the thing still seeps a bit.

Gary,
That's the seal I replaced, it goes around the outside of the bullet, you
can see the groove in the middle of the bullet.
When I pulled the plastic gear out of the bullet there wasn't any seal
inside.

Rob,
You've embarrassed this old parts man. But I can come back!
The seal is not listed in the GMC book. HOWEVER, it is listed
in both the Cadillac and Oldsmobile parts books. Go figure!
Looks like part #1240382 is the culprit. But, don't order it
from
GM. It comes in a pack of ten and the dealer doesn't want to
stock
it, so you buy ten. I got mine at the CarQuest store. One only.
