after recharging the system i notice that i get 60 deg. air at idle and 70 deg. air at highway speed. i've only driven it about 5 miles at speed but this is what i notice. i put in 3 cans of Duracool and have about 18 to 20Lb. on the suction side.
so, can the clutch be worn out causing it to slip at speed? this is the OEM compressor as far as i know. it used to cycle about every minute.

18 -20lbs at idle or@1500 RPM,if it's at idle 600RPM you don't have enough refrigerant, if it is at 1500 RPM and it is hot outside and you are using 100% outside air you may be a little short. Is the suction line cold?

the system had been converted to r134 by po but had a leak. i hope i've stopped the leak.
the system has been open and i've changed the dryer and all o-rings.
i have a vacuum pump and pulled it down for 20 or so minutes.
i charged it up with Duracool, was by myself so it was running at about 1000 RPM.
the clutch has always cycled a lot.

One thing with Duracool is that a lower charge will get the system colder. Too low will cause a freezeup of the evaporator though if there is any humidity in the air.
When you say you have 18-20 psi at perhaps 1000 rpm that tells me that you probably have 30 psi at 1500 rpm. That would indicate too high a charge.
I have found that the typical GMC takes just under three cans. If you put in a full three cans you might have a bit too much.
If you are working alone use a stick of wood or a baseball bat and put it on the gas pedal and wedge it against the seat. Move the seat forward or back to get the right distance. You should be able to get your engine running at 1500 rpm pretty easily. Then, with the air conditioner on high, check your gauge on the low pressure side. If it is above 20 psi then bleed off a little bit of refrigerant to get it down to 20 psi. It won't take much refrigerant to do this. Then check your temperature coming from the outlets. It should be colder.
