I am thinking of using a Swampy MW1 mini swamp cooler at Burning Man this year. I don't want to run the generator all week so this is an alternative. Anyone have any experience with one?

"Swamp" is the key word, "Cool" has little to do with it. If you are in 110* heat, you won't be happy. That unit also looks pretty small. You'd do better with a household roof mount downdraft unit on top of the coach blowing into where your roof vent is, or a side draft unit blowing into a rear window (On you, as you sleep) mounted on a 2x4 stand outside. Run with an inverter or install a 1/3 hp 12 VDC motor for the fan, and a 12v fountain pump for the water. Forget about using Ice. It won't last but a few min.

They are great up to about 90*, in a dry climate, with proper airflow, and if you keep them clean (They even begin to smell like a swamp).

We had a rooftop RV swamp cooler when I was a kid, was about that size, and it didn't work worth crap. It cost nearly what an AC unit cost. My dad was too cheap to pop for a small genny...

George,

No real experience with this particular swamp cooler.

I visited my Uncle up in Grand Junction, Colorado and he had a swamp cooler
to cool the house.

The "atmosphere" felt "clammy."

No experience with this product, but swamp coolers work really well in the Black Rock desert. It's dry dry dry -- except when it rains..even then, it's a dry rain.

However, remember that you're fighting solar gain through the (high-E and huge) windows, and the inside of the coach might not be comfy if it gets too humid.

I've seen evaporatively-cooled straw bale structures work incredibly well out there, though.

If you give it a shot, please report back!

We used a swamp cooler for a house where I lived in Phoenix for a few years. I thought it worked great as long as humidity was low enough. Don't understand comment about not working above 90deg. Don't think temperature has a thing to do with it. Hotter ought to be better. Low humidity OTOH is critical. Water in the cooler won't evaporate (fast enough to cool) if the air is already saturated.

There are only 2 things wrong with water coolers (swamp Coolers)

1: Most People do not know how to use them
2: They do not work well in high humidity areas.

The things that are right about them is

1: The will lower Temperatures by 20 degrees not much more
2: They are cheap to operate compared to AC
3: Most parts are owner replaceable

This is from 40 years experience in using them, replacing them and
repairing them.

OK they work when it is 115* outside, but as Serge said, you only get about 20* differential. it'll still be 95* in the house, and that is if it has the proper airflow for the space, and how much solar gain the unit itself is actually getting on the rooftop.

Keeping it clean is not a huge issue as Burning Man only runs
one week.

As to a 20 degree drop, that would be a giant improvement in that environment.

I don't expect ( or get ) much more than that in my central air conditioner
at home.
