I have a question regarding a small problem I'm having.
When traveling on the highway in the 65 MPH range, when I get to a hill and need
to give it some gas, I get what feels like some "missing", it's not major, just
annoying. It almost feels like fuel starvation or weak spark, that type of
hesitation.
So when going up hills I have to go easy on the gas or the missing gets worse,
it's primarily when trying to maintain a speed up a hill and the engine is under
more than an average load.
What would your thoughts be on this?? I just put in Dick Pattersons new
Springfield Ignition System last fall with his new wire set. I have the OEM
power wire to the new Dist.
I've sent a separate email to Dick for his input.

I can think of 2 things Ray. My first thought would be like you think fuel starvation most likely caused by a plugged up fuel filter. A weak fuel pump could also be a cause. The 2nd thought would be a problem with the vacuum plate in the distributor causing the pickup coil to open or short. This is the least likely and could be checked by disconnecting the the vacuum to the distributor and driving it to see if it happens.

It's almost certainly fuel starvation, or "vapor lock". My coach does the exact same thing and has for the three years I have had it. The fix is clean fuel filters and an electric fuel pump, mounted as close to the tanks as possible. Even better, in-tank fuel pumps, as some have installed and some are working on (Dan G).
I have done several things to combat this problem; new filter in the carb. Mr. Gasket heat dissipator under the carb, Jim B. heat shielded, braided fuel line from the fuel pump to the carb, white paint on the bottom of the tanks, heavy duty fan clutch. All these things helped, but it wasn't until I installed a pull-through type electric fuel pump that I really had success. It will still vapor lock somewhat on surface streets on 90 + degree days, but it is nothing more than a minor annoyance any more.
