I had just posted about the huge plume of smoke south of Los Alamos (which is about 40 miles from Santa Fe as the crow flies.)
The 5:00 news just came on and they confirm what I said about it being south of Los Alamos. They say it is 12 miles south west of Los Alamos. It is heading for the Bandilier National Monument. They are evacuating campgrounds there. Bandilier is located just south of the city of Los Alamos.

The news says the smoke is stretching out about 100 miles from the fire and that it is a very, very large, fast moving fire.

The news also says there is a 500 acre fire spreading from south west of Albuquerque.

You better look at a map. State Hwy 4 doesn't run from Santa Fe. It runs from Los Alamos west to the Jemez mountains and then south-southwest to the Santo Domingo Pueblo.
If you want to drive to Los Alamos from Santa Fe you go north on 85 then, at Pojoaque you turn west onto 502.

This fire started at about 2 pm yesterday as by this morning it has burned about 40,000 acres or 68 square miles according to the TV news. Both Los Alamos and White Rock (the bedroom community for Los Alamos are under voluntary evacuation but that might become mandatory if the fire crosses one more large ridge toward the city.

Got it, we've been up to Los Alamos several times. Great museum regarding
the activities at the lab over the last 60 years. Been to Bandolier as well.
If I recall did they not have a big fire up there about 10 years ago?

Thanks

About 15 minutes they made a mandatory evacuation for the city of Los Alamos.

You know, I don't understand why we don't have something like concussion bombs that would sniff out fires by blowing out the oxygen.

Alternatively, why would not the laser guided bombs work?

It is amazing that with all the technology we have, someone has not come up with a way to extinguish fires or blow apart hurricanes!!!!!.............Michael at GEMRECS

Gary,,,,,I think it was 11 years ago. The wife and I took the 16 and 17 yo on a mc trip. 33' southwind and trailer. We stayed at a state park near las vegas NM. No outside burning. had to go purchase a propane grill,,,,no charcoal. We road thru the los alamos area after it burned. Really strange,,,signs laying on the ground because the 4x4 post burned. Only tree trunks. No undergroth. At the gas station at the bottom of the hill we looked back from where we came from and it was all black up in the hills. All burnt. On that trip with that 16,000 pound sob and 2k trailer we averaged 5.5mpg!!!!! Going up to esenhower tunnel(eastbound) we were wfo for 20 min in 1st gear(454)!!!!!,,,,PL

Michael,

I reckon it is because the O2 would only be blown away for a few seconds and
the fire would re-ignite once it returned.

In the case of hurricanes I reckon you'd need an atomic explosion to snuff
them out.

YEAH - and all of those options would do a lot more damage than the fires.
