Can someone tell me what the problem is? After the coach has sat for
a week or more, the transmission slips. I can start out from where it
is parked, but just a few feet ahead it will be like the transmission is
in neutral. I let up on the gas and it will catch and move again. It
only does this when I first take off after setting for a week or so. I
can drive hundreds of miles and it will not do this again. Some one
told me that the torque converter was draining. How can I tell if that
is the problem? How do I stop it?? Is this a problem that I should get
fixed right away?? I always let up on the gas so it will not bang into
gear. I have driven hundreds of thousands of miles with Automatic
transmissions, never had a problem with any of them.

Gary,
All converters drain.
Check that the fluid level is at the L O W mark as the trans will be
cold and check the level.
If you add more , you'll ot like the result when it gets hot.
If the level is good, then we need to look at other things.

are you checking the oil level correctly with engine running? it is difficult to read the stick. mine reads better on the back side than the front. i always check it 3 or 4 times to be sure i'm getting a good reading.

Mine was doing something like this when cold after sitting for days / weeks. Might not engage, might engage then disengage, etc. until it warms up a little. I had MGMGMC change the fluid and filter, and it has been perfect all week, so I'm hoping that fixed it.

Jim
The level of the fluid is at the full mark when warm. I will check it
cold the next time I am at the lot where it is stored. I have not had
this problem before in the 13 years that I have owned it. I have only
had to add maybe a pint of fluid in all that time. The fluid is a nice
red color.

Thanks for the reply Fred
Yes I am checking as you do. Several times in a row, just to make sure,
when the transmission is warm. After driving several miles, sometimes
hundreds of miles. In the 13 years I have owned it, I have only had to
add maybe a pint of ATF.

I hope you have changed the filter and the fluid sometime during those
13 years
Your problem could be a clogged filter or perhaps it is sucking air
througt the o ring where the filter pushes into the transmission.
Most of us now use two oil rings on the filter to prevent this as a
problem.

mannystrans wrote on Mon, 27 June 2011 10:33 | First, you should always have first gear.
So when you shift the lever into drive, you should feel positive engagement.
Taking your foot off the brake pedal, the motorhome will want to go forward.
Converter leak down varies from converter to converter, (tranny to tranny)
In your case, it seems that you have engagement when you put ir in drive,
only after a few feet it feels like its in neutral.
To me it looks like its trying to shift too soon. Increase the
pressure on the modulator.

Well, the older TorqueFLite emptied the converter when in PARK on purpose. Their dipsticks are marked "CHECK IN NEUTRAL". They will read wrong(high) if checked in park.

A brilliant engineer told me that the torque converter will fill up much more
rapidly in Neutral than in Park. Worth a try.
