The earlier thread discussing the Wheat GMC and other scams got me thinking;
Do the molds and whatnot still exist? Could it be done? If so, what would it look like?
What drive train?
There isn't a modern FWD combination big enough, correct?
Would you then go with a modified 4WD setup, like the second generation Revcon?
Could you take some weight off the original design? And then use a diesel and really gain some MPG?
Imagine if everything the Jim's amd others have learned and developed were incorporated into a new design.
And could it be done for, say, $120,000?

There some molds all around the country, but the condition and size of
them is another.
I believe Jim B knows where some are and others.
Wheet was going to use the same ones.

I saw the 2 mold halves for the front clip at Golby about 10 years ago. The problem is the jig to hold them and all the equipment to run the machinery is massive and unless someone was in that business and has access, it's got to be cost prohibitive.

The workhorse FWD chassis would be a good candidate, that is what Jim B has used, but at like $60K a copy, by the time you get the coach built, you are looking at $200K. At that point, we have the new Monaco Vesta, which is built wholly by Monaco (except the engine and tranny) like the GMC was sorta built wholly by GM. It is all metal and FRP (or SMC) and all the systems are engineered by the same folks to work together. Sorta like a Mac vs a PC, it should just work better.
I think that is the direction these things are going, and with that out there, other than the current funky styling, why would I want a New GMC that doesn't have much room. The Vesta is a RWD Diesel Puller if I recall, and the article in FMC stated it was pretty quiet and had no heat from the engine room.
I love my GMC, but We will outgrow the thing when we start spending part of the year in her. That's a long way off, and then maybe a nice gently used Vesta would fit nicely next to my GMC.

Back in the early 90's we toured the Explorer Van Company on U S 30 W in Warsaw Indiana ~
They had an assembly line set up just for the GMC Motorhomes `
As I remember it was Frame Up Restorations ~
powder Blast The Frames , they had body molds, new 455's, new 425's and new wiring ~
I loved those Explorer Leather Seats, 6 way Leather driver & Passenger seats ~
The Power Leather dinette seats and the rear leather gucho seats were electricly controlled
and would fold down~ at the push of a button by the seat or by the dash panel
They also had an optional double front 3-way passenger seat that would raise up 6"
and the folded over seat back would flip up as the couch lifted and stertch into a full size bed ~

It would cost more than $120,000 just to file all the paperwork with the
DOT, EPA, and every other bloody US Government agency!

I just responded to another post on the Wheat GMC project. Yes, now that I see the name of the camper, it was alaskancamper that Don owned at the time I met him. BTW, I also recall he said he lost a good deal of his own money in the project, I think he said in excess of a million dollars, but my memory is fuzzy on that.

Joe,
I have a hard time believing those engines were new. They must have
been rebuilt. Also the transmission. There is a distinction between
new and rebuilt.

As Jim K speculated (above), the engines were NOT new. Though the article states they were rebuilt, frankly, I have reason to believe the motor in my coach was never rebuilt.
I loved my Explorer II but, as the company probably lost money on every GMC they resurrected, they may have cut some corners as time went by.

That was an interesting read. Thanks for sharing. It appears there was much
work done for what must have been very little ROI. Unless some really bad
coaches were bought for a really low price making a profit must have been
hard.

A technical correction about the Monaco Vesta (and the Holiday Rambler Trip,
the twin sister). These are the first units designed and built under the
Navistar umbrella. That would mean it has an International MaxxForce diesel
on a Workhorse chassis with body and interior by Monaco/Holiday Ramble. Yes,
you are looking at $200K and a front end only a mother could love. Of
course, that price includes a slide-out and it still rides high.
Other than the Winnebago Spectrum, the only other thing that came close to
replacing the GMC (for concept, etc) was the Newmar NewAire. One is listed
on the web for $30K - cheapest I've seen by about $30K.

The GMC Explorer II Motorhome Project was The Love Of the Father of Steve Kesler {Bob Kesler} ~
Bob Kesler told me that they tryed the GM 6.2 Diesel, the 454 but found the 455 best suited ~
Later, when his son {Steve}took control of the company, the GMC Motorhome assembly was dropped ~
It was real neat seeing just how the power dining seats and the rear facing seats
would automatically fold out to make into a bed ~ I was impressed by the interior quality ~
I would still like to acquire one of their Power Tri-Fold Front Passenger Seats ~
I almost bought a gutted '74 26 footer & was quoted by Bob $40 K for the upgrade on it ~
{but that was in the early 90's}
