[GMCnet] Replace Front Seal on Onan [message #131689]

I pulled out the Onan and found a good deal of oil had leaked since the last time I had it out. The oil was all over the muffler and the outter door. I checked the oil and it was full ... a little over full. I had to replace the starter bracket and found the seal leaking but I wrongly thought it was ok. How hard is it to replace the seal and where can I get one.

Before you go too far you may want
to check the crank case breather valve.
mine was plugged and my onan was blowing
oil out and quit after I cleaned the
breather.

Also check the oil sender and oil filter mounting assy.
You'll find that mostof the leas are not from the shaft.

I'm a bit confused as to which seal you're talking about. By Front Seal do
you mean the one that seals the fan shaft?

Please clarify.

Thanks Jim

I checked the filter and it had come loose. Is that a problem with the Onan. I had used a wrench to tighten the filter when I installed it last year at end of season. I guess the loose filter could have caused it to quit ??? low oil pressure. Right now it is running and I have it connected to a separate fuel supple with clear fuel lines to see if it quits is it fuel problem. Both AC are running. After a half an hour I will turn on the hot water heater to fully load the Onan. I have two 13.5 AC running full out.

For canister type filters, in motorcycle racing it's common to tighten a hose clamp around the filter and lock-wire it to an immovable. Simple and effective. Wink

Having said that when I pulled the flywheel off Double Trouble's Onan I
found that the seal was fine, it appears that the oil is coming from
somewhere else. I didn't have time to troubleshoot it before I returned to
Australia.
