I've no need for the 10 inch high dollar 10K rpm tachs for the coach.  I found a small one for cheap - Sun's budget line - which goes to 8K.  Now, I can't see any reason whatsoever to twist this thing beyond 4K, so I'm in the process of renumbering the dial and running it in 4cyl mode, where the 8 cyl pulsetrain will make it read double.  Might pin it coming down Monteagle east of Gnashville, but otherwise, 4K should be plenty.
Next time I get over to home, I'll see if someone at the airport has a leftover MAP gauge, meantimes I managed to find a combo vacuum/boost one that will at least keep my foot out of it.

If you hit the top end coming down Monteagle in either direction let me know
to not be around. I hate seeing road kill.

By the way, last Saturday some hotshot driver in a 4x4 SUV managed to flip
his Chevy in the rain. He was Heading down toward Nickajack and about
half-way to the truck pullout. Some fools think they have more traction in a
4x4 than they really do. I'll bet the same guy always slid to a stop in snow
and wondered why he didn't have improved handling when slowing since he had
better luck taking off.

Agree, 4K rpms is enough. I seldom get above 3400. Even then I'm thinking a
liftoff is eminent.

You might want to consider the TachVac. A bunch of us did a group buy a
while back and got these. Nice and small and having the RPM and the VAC on
the same gauge makes sense from a diagnostic point of view.

A Tach-Vac is exactly what I want.

Looking at that site they look like they're about $300. Is that the right cost for one of these or is there another way?

I wasn't able to decipher which model number
might have been the Tach-Vac.

I want one, also!

I thought Bill Brown had his hands around this.

carguybill@sbcglobal.net

Of course, JimK @ Applied has them on his website

http://www.appliedgmc.com/level.itml/icOid/451

~$300 is what to expect.

I taught my wife to watch the vac as well as the tach when going up hill.
She's more conscientious than I about not letting the vac get to 6. Of
course, there are times I've had to open the trap door in the floor and
start swing the pedals into position.

Johnny,

JimB helped me install one of these panels under the steering column:

http://www.appliedgmc.com/prod.itml/icOid/501

with these cheap Harbor Freight Gauges:

http://tinyurl.com/6a8ke43

http://www.harborfreight.com/catalogsearch/result/?&currentpage=2&RequestDat
a=CA_AttributeSelected&ResultsPerPage=27&defsortcols=&q=gages&category=&mode
=grid&AttribSel=Brand='Nitrous'&category=&CatPath=All+Products%2F%2F%2F%2FUs
erSearch%3Dgages

I got them on sale for $19.99 each; I am FULLY aware that they are probably
not as accurate as Stewart Warner, VDO, Sun, etc; however, I reckon they're
good enough as I also have the OEM instruments and a Digi-Panel. BTW they do
read close to the Digi-Panel.

I think it's damned clever to put the tach on 4-cylinders! My little tach, installed by my beloved PO, goes to 8,000 RPM and I can't really tell how fast the motor is spinning.

That's the direction I'm headed - I'm interested in trends.  I like to see MAP trending up, and engine speed out of the lug range.  Absolutes in this situation aren't as important.  When the lottery comes in, complete new dash.  Until then, I'll have to soldier on with the original plus a couple of necessary add - ons.

Subject: [GMCnet] Tachometer

I've no need for the 10 inch high dollar 10K rpm tachs for the coach.  I
found a small one for cheap - Sun's budget line - which goes to 8K.  Now, I
can't see any reason whatsoever to twist this thing beyond 4K, so I'm in the
process of renumbering the dial and running it in 4cyl mode, where the 8 cyl
pulsetrain will make it read double.  Might pin it coming down Monteagle
east of Gnashville, but otherwise, 4K should be plenty.
Next time I get over to home, I'll see if someone at the airport has a
leftover MAP gauge, meantimes I managed to find a combo vacuum/boost one
that will at least keep my foot out of it.

I looked at it.  It was a little pricey for what I'm attempting to do.  But would make a nice clean installation.

You might want to consider the TachVac. A bunch of us did a group buy a
while back and got these. Nice and small and having the RPM and the VAC on
the same gauge makes sense from a diagnostic point of view.

Have you bought the winning ticket yet? If not, I'll send you some money so
we can share the profit if that's OK with you. Shucks, might as well send
enough to buy two winning tickets.

Send the bux, I'll buy you as many as you wanna oay for.  I only buy when the money odds exceed the winning odds.  And when I >do< win, the Bureau of Standards needs to get one of those chambers at 0C and controlled atmosphere and put me in it with a plaque which says "Standrd Sorry S.O.B.".  I'll show yall what 'sorry' really is!

Kanomata will rent me a competent mechanic to follow the GMC and keep it up.  Songer Consuiting will rent me a kid to make all my decisions.
"Kid, what do I want for breakfast?"  "You want eggs over hard and a waffle".  Then "Kid, what do I wear today?"  "You want your nice pants, you're showing this afternnon.  Then you're gonna have some beer and relax."  Etc.
