One of the stated goals of my small contribution to the GMC community was to put GMC motorhomes back on the road. I did this by reselling the coaches that were too good to part out at a low cost. Another method was through selling body parts to repair damaged GMCs. Seven GMCs have been reclaimed from the parking lot using these methods.
The latest, and last, GMC that I have that could be reclaimed is a 1976 Edgemonte. I sold it for $2500 and the buyer has traveled 260 miles one way to my shop to work on it. After a few weekends of tinkering, he started it last Saturday and drove it to another spot in my lot He also got the Onan running, though I think it is not producing AC current yet. To be fair, he is an aircraft mechanic by trade, not a non-mechanic like me.
These GMCs never cease to amaze me in their ability to bounce back from apparent ruin. Yes, they are a pain to get everything up and reliable-and to keep it in that state, but what a joy to drive! Also, once something is fixed, it tends to stay fixed, and like Porsches, they are susceptable to modification and many owners do just that.
The latest "overhaul" I have seen is from my crating partner. He is having the interior totally redone. A cabinet maker is making everything in oak. Overhead cabinets are in 3 foot and 2 foot sections from Lowes, then stained to match the oak color. Two sections make a 5 ft cabinet between the galley and the "electric module" which contains a microwave, small refer "for my drinks" and another all electric refer that cost only $190 (vs $500-700 for a LPG/electric refer). He found Flexsteel seats from a van that are less wide than the typical Flexsteel seats found in motorhomes. The cabinet maker remade the closet module in oak using the original module as a pattern. There is even a built in place for the flat screen TV. The original refer space is now a large closet. The bath module exterior is covered in oak as well.
The '76 Edgemonte we are transitioning to, also was modified as is the '74 Eleganza we have used for 7 years and will soon offer for sale..........Michael at GEMRECS
