Good morning, all.
Looking to rebuild or replace my carb and intake manifold.
Have a 403, so I've heard an Edelbrock Performer intake will fit with no floor modification. Which specfic performer (they make several) is best for the GMC?
I assume I would have to get an electric choke.
Jim B's website says will rebuild carb for about $300. Anything special about this rebuild pertaining to our application, or could I just buy a new aftermarket (Edelbrock, Holley, etc)?
Any wisdom would be appreciated. Thanks.

The Quadrajet on the engine is jetted and calibrated for the 403 in low speed hi torque service. An aftermarket likely won't be. I'd build it and put it back. And if I wasn't intamitely familiar with the Quadrajet (I'm not) I'd let Jim K or Jim B or one of the gurus do it, it's worth the loot.
One day - but not today - I may redo mine with a ThermoQuad or an AFB. God and Carter made good carburetors :):)

I've had good luck with my street avenger by holley. But watch out for ethanol gas. It messed up my secondaries. The new Aluminum body avengers should be ok with it...

For information on carb and rebuilding...

scroll down and read Brent Covey comments...
Dick Paterson is the most recognized carb rebuilder should you decide to send it out -- but it (reportedly) has to be a real GMC carb, because of the unique features.
Folks have reported succeess with other carbs -- but with the original it is easier to get help from this group or from the vendors.
The main advantage of pulling the manifold might be to block the exhaust crossover.

biggreen wrote on Tue, 21 June 2011 16:28 | Was it the Big Green that tipped you off? Yes 77 in NE Fla. I thought the block off plates blocked the crossover. I've heard of having them filled. Whats the advantage? Thanks for the info.

RD,
Send your carb up to Dick Patterson in Canada, I GA-RON-TEE you will be
happy with his workmanship! Come to think of it while you're at it send him
your distributor so he can re-curve it, when you refit those two items you
WILL NOT believe how much better your GMC will perform. I sure was!

I have a 455 in my GMCs and wouldn't know if the Performer will fit without
raising the floor or not. I would plug the crossovers and under no
circumstances use the cast iron plugs that come with the manifold. They
messed up Ken H's heads big time. I can't seem to find the pictures.
