after close inspection it seems that the cassette adaptor that came with my coach 8 track my had been used by a barbarian at one time. the mechanical tuner in my radio is well bent beyond repair. i dont need to spend a lot since it is mainly noise, and i hate buggering up my dash, what radios can anyone recommend
also related, i assume the antenna on my rear view id for cb, there looks like on top of cab what was an antenna at one time, mount is there, spring loooking gizmo is there, but arial is not, is that something that can just be screwed in? no set screw is seen for to hold it?
thanks bgk

What you want is a Single DIN (that's the spec) radio. There are 100's
available.

JimB would probably suggest an antenna that sits at an angle to replace what
you have left.

Your turn to do some research on the web.

Personally, I had a Sony installed with an Aux-In on the front so I could
plug in iPhone and listen to my own music. I didn't get a CD player. CD's
are so 20th century.

Sounds like some PO buggered up your rooftop AM/FM antenna. One of the Jims should have the parts to fix that.
I just picked up a digital Sony Xplod AM/FM/Bluetooth/MP3/XM ready/HD ready with a single CD and remote for $60 on eBay. What you do is remove the big dash faceplate (unscrews up top, tilt out, lift upwards)and then get the original radio out of the hole. You might have to actually pull the donut, no biggie. Cut or bend off the ears that held the old knobs and install the single DIN bracket that comes with the radio or get a better adapter from a radio store. Get a universal GM harness and wire it up to the various leads (solder and shrink wrap - do not just use tape and twists). The plug will become a common for DIN radios so you can do what you want from there.
An FM/CD is just for driving noise, you're right. For serious tunes when parked you might investigate compact systems running off an inverter.
I have my radio running off the house battery so I have music while working on the coach. I did upgrade speakers and wires, though.

RIA figures show music CDs dropping off at 15-20% per year since 2009.
I like composing my own discs since i love the sound of midis. The good units today can handle a 40 gig hardrive thru a USB port.

Gene has it right, as usual. I'd forgotten some of the details of the installation. Do it his way. If you can support the radio in the back it will be very steady.

A quick search of pictures shows mostly rear fender stubs on older Vettes with windshield antennae nowadays. I have no clue if there is wire mesh in the fender.

G'day,

I haven't followed this thread so I will apologize in advance if I ask a
question that has already been answered.

JimB installed a terrific radio in Double Trouble when I was down at the
COOP. However, operating it is NOT very intuitive. I reckon it takes a
pimply teenager to run it and I am far from that stage! VERY FAR!

At any rate does anyone suggest a radio with a CD player that is SIMPLE to
operate!

Don't care if it has an iPod whatists or not!

Log onto the Crutchfield.com site, and you will find all sorts of choices. I would still recommend getting a radio with at least a front input so if you do eventually get an iPod or other player, you will be able to play it through your radio.

As far as an antenna, Jim B was able to set me up with a stubby little antenna instead of the original whip antenna, and it seems to work fine in the original location. The aluminum top of the coach is the ground plate.

To get a good modern radio that will fit in the original radio space without dash modification most likely would not be cheap.

As others have posted, the modification for a single DIN isn't that much. Then just about any single DIN radio will work. (Read you should be able to find some cheap radios with lots of variation in features and quality.)

As far as a recommendation:

Someone posted about about a single DIN radio that has no moving parts. It is a radio with USB input(s) and NO CD PLAYER. Looked like a good reliable radio/mp3 player at a good price.... (I can not find the link right now.)

I am trying to talk my suppliers into eliminating CD players from the radios. The CD player has the highest failure rate of the audio system in a commercial truck.

My biggest challenge is getting them to design an in-dash navigation system with radio, bluetooth, satellite and NO CD player, oh and it also has to be less than 4 inches deep.

I really wish I could put a double DIN radio in the dash, might look into relocating the heater controls at some point.

Speaking of antenna's (sorry to hijack the thread) any comments on the factory roof mounted antenna vs a mirror mounted whip antenna?

I'm just the opposite - MP3s are so scurvy when the coach is stopped and you can hear the music that I gotta have the CD player.  For single DIN radios, look at the Kenwood stuff among others.  Sony makes an excellent product, but they're quite proud of it.  If you want 'ridiculous' buy a control head and seperate amps and speakers.. and the sky's the limit on them.
For reasonable cost and sound, my new speakers from Amazon arrived yesterday and I spent a couple hours last night mounting them on the OEM baffles after removing the dreck GM put there.  Pictures on the way, I'm waiting for a couple of guages so I only have to remove the daskboard once.

If you have a previous CB-type antenna mount with just the spring left, you will find that the spring is a pretty universal fitting, and most screw-in CB antennas will work. The P.O. of my coach did the very same thing on my coach. Need to remove it and repair the damage. Holes are holes, they all will and can leak.

Tom,

The ground plane is really only required to make a transmitting system:
A - Radiate the signal in an desired and effective direction,
B - Allow matching so that the transmitted power is actually radiated and not reflected back to the transmitter output.

I'm others that still do more RF work than I do can fill in some cases.

ANY antenna that is mounted on the roof is highly
likely to give better performance than a mirror-
mounted antenna. The expanse of metal of the roof
gives a far more equal ground plane for the antenna
and resultant more equal performance in all directions.
Theoretically, it should be best straight ahead and
behind.

Mirror mounted antennas do NOT have the good ground
plane and the vehicle body tends to block reception
AND transmission in a large pie wedge of directions.

I intend to put a combined VHF/UHF ham antenna on the
roof when my progress on restoring my coach gets to
that point. I will probably mount a "screwdriver"
type antenna for HF on the ladder or luggage rack
as high as practical.

My coach has a K-40 CB antenna with a magnet base
mounted to a pipe flange bolted to the on the driver
side mirror bracket. I will probably just leave it
that way as CB is basically good for maybe 1/2 to
1 mile and that location will serve quite well.

Regarding "music" radio, I have a fine AM/FM/Cassete
radio that I removed from a travel trailer that was
destroyed in 1999 by a tornado. I also retrieved the
12-disk CD player and that will do me just fine. I
can't imagine having to convert all my reel-to-reel,
cassette, and CD music to MP3 and trying to remember
where all that stuff is!
