after close inspection it seems that the cassette adaptor that came with my coach 8 track my had been used by a barbarian at one time. the mechanical tuner in my radio is well bent beyond repair. i dont need to spend a lot since it is mainly noise, and i hate buggering up my dash, what radios can anyone recommend
also related, i assume the antenna on my rear view id for cb, there looks like on top of cab what was an antenna at one time, mount is there, spring loooking gizmo is there, but arial is not, is that something that can just be screwed in? no set screw is seen for to hold it?
thanks bgk

What you want is a Single DIN (that's the spec) radio. There are 100's
available.
JimB would probably suggest an antenna that sits at an angle to replace what
you have left.
Your turn to do some research on the web.
Personally, I had a Sony installed with an Aux-In on the front so I could
plug in iPhone and listen to my own music. I didn't get a CD player. CD's
are so 20th century.

Sounds like some PO buggered up your rooftop AM/FM antenna. One of the Jims should have the parts to fix that.
I just picked up a digital Sony Xplod AM/FM/Bluetooth/MP3/XM ready/HD ready with a single CD and remote for $60 on eBay. What you do is remove the big dash faceplate (unscrews up top, tilt out, lift upwards)and then get the original radio out of the hole. You might have to actually pull the donut, no biggie. Cut or bend off the ears that held the old knobs and install the single DIN bracket that comes with the radio or get a better adapter from a radio store. Get a universal GM harness and wire it up to the various leads (solder and shrink wrap - do not just use tape and twists). The plug will become a common for DIN radios so you can do what you want from there.
An FM/CD is just for driving noise, you're right. For serious tunes when parked you might investigate compact systems running off an inverter.
I have my radio running off the house battery so I have music while working on the coach. I did upgrade speakers and wires, though.

Log onto the Crutchfield.com site, and you will find all sorts of choices. I would still recommend getting a radio with at least a front input so if you do eventually get an iPod or other player, you will be able to play it through your radio.
As far as an antenna, Jim B was able to set me up with a stubby little antenna instead of the original whip antenna, and it seems to work fine in the original location. The aluminum top of the coach is the ground plate.

To get a good modern radio that will fit in the original radio space without dash modification most likely would not be cheap.
As others have posted, the modification for a single DIN isn't that much. Then just about any single DIN radio will work. (Read you should be able to find some cheap radios with lots of variation in features and quality.)
As far as a recommendation:
Someone posted about about a single DIN radio that has no moving parts. It is a radio with USB input(s) and NO CD PLAYER. Looked like a good reliable radio/mp3 player at a good price.... (I can not find the link right now.)

I'm just the opposite - MP3s are so scurvy when the coach is stopped and you can hear the music that I gotta have the CD player. For single DIN radios, look at the Kenwood stuff among others. Sony makes an excellent product, but they're quite proud of it. If you want 'ridiculous' buy a control head and seperate amps and speakers.. and the sky's the limit on them.
For reasonable cost and sound, my new speakers from Amazon arrived yesterday and I spent a couple hours last night mounting them on the OEM baffles after removing the dreck GM put there. Pictures on the way, I'm waiting for a couple of guages so I only have to remove the daskboard once.

If you have a previous CB-type antenna mount with just the spring left, you will find that the spring is a pretty universal fitting, and most screw-in CB antennas will work. The P.O. of my coach did the very same thing on my coach. Need to remove it and repair the damage. Holes are holes, they all will and can leak.
