Hi,
Spoke with Steve yesterday. Conditions are not good. After being evaculated
once he and Nancy (and the dogs) were packed for a second evacuation. While
Steve has a tile roof and no exposed wood plus lots of surrounding gravel
and clearance he still felt uncomfortable. He has several of his prized
vehicles parked in the very middle of another property he owns in Sierra
Vista. His property backs up to the Ft. Huachuca base and the day before
yesterday a tractor hit a rock on base causing a spark and a big fire right
behind his house. So he is ready to move. Some of the very restaurants that
we had dinner at with Steve and Nancy on the MAIN HIGHWAY 92 are gone. 50
MPH winds have not helped. Have not heard anything about Dave at this point.
Not much else to report.
Thanks

I have a brother-in-law that lives in Sierra Vista and works at the fort in
the Electromagnetics Effects Division - just love seeing that on his
business card! He voluntarily evacuated yesterday as they shut down or
disconnected the utilities in his area.
I sent Stave a PO earlier and have not heard back yet.

I haven't heard from Steve since yesterday, but Nancy has been on Facebook as recently as 3 hrs ago. I think the fire danger has passed their immediate area.

Wow! Hope everyone is out of the way down there! Any word if they are using the DC-10 or 747 mega tankers to drop water or retardant? Every fire season here in CA when I see it get bad enough that they call those guys in, I think why don't we have a few squadrons of those planes ready to go come fire season? And why don't they send them out before it gets huge!? Just some thoughts...

Because they would rather rent CL215 CL415's from all over Canada at a million a week than buy them they usually rent them from Manitoba

We are under pre-evac orders. A friend of mine used to have the Border
Patrol Towing contract and he has a 10' walled in yard with a coded gate for
impound. Holds 500 cars and that's where most of the hot rods in this end
of town are stored. I spent yesterday helping neighbors get vehicles &
trailers moved. We came within one house of being burned out, very close
and a last ditch effort by the air tankers and the Naco fire dept saved all
of the homes up against Ft Huachuca.
Dave Greenberg Jr refused to evacuate and stayed with his property until
the fire jumped Hwy 92 and roared towards him. 100' flames sucked the
oxygen out of his area and that's when he finally dropped the garden hose
and got smart. At this time, I do not know if he got burned out or not as
there is no access to the area.
So far, no wind this am but they do the plane maintenance in the am so no
slurry drops during this prime opportunity. I, and many others, wish
they'd do the maintenance at night since they don't drop then either. The
helocoptors fly dawn til dush but they are not much match for this fire.
The Huachuca mtns a mile S. of our house have been burning for days now and
I see no end unless the big tankers take to the air. We have most of the
major assets from the Wallows fire in NE AZ here along with 1,200 fire
fighters. The National Guard will be here today because local law
enforcement cannot cover the many security assignments in the evacuated
areas. ALL here have made it clear that looters will be shot on sight,
survivors will be shot again.
If I hear anything from Dave Jr, I'll post it.

Steve,
Scary time -- thanks for taking the time to update as we were all concerned about you.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your neighbors -- and with those fighting the fires.

Steve, glad to hear how you guys are holding up down there, keep us posted as you can. Prayers are withyou guys down there in AZ. I know those firecrews will do everything possible to get'er done.
As for that 747 its an Amazing piece of equipment! Its operated by Evergreen aviation and they are currently trying to get 2 more of these levithans certified for tanker ops by the FAA, so as it stand they have 2 which are operational. These planes can dump 20k+ gallons of water or retardant covering a football wide path up to 3 miles long! A fleet of these could lay down a containment line in short order. These aircraft are also outfitted with advanced GPS and FLIR systems which would make night drops also a possibility. They have used it in the AZ fire, but they waited unti
l it was already over 600 sq miles before they called it in... :-/

David Jr spent hours on his roof with hoses soaking everything they could
reach while grandaughter Dana and her two babies packed up the house for the
mandatory evac. He said the flames were being carried by 60 mph winds and
roared right past hsi place destroying 5 homes less than a half mile away.
He drove his motorcycle (trying be more stealthy as he wasn't supposed to be
there) to his ranch up in nearby Mtns. He was in process of trying to start
his bulldozer when he could feel heat behind him. He moved the dozer to an
area that had already burned. Family, animals, homes and equipt all safe.
Ricardo (steakhouse owner) was not so fortunate he moved everything he could
load and sent it to his restaurant. Several hours later the restaurant
burned to the ground. His home was spared
Situation is still grim.

They did some big back burns last night so I think those of us W of 92 are
going to be OK. I watched as Ricardos burned, very sad, the area is still
under mandatory evac but they're letting folks who check in with LE back in
most areas. The mountains are still burning and no effort was made to slow
or stop the fires progress yesterday. So sad to see.
Glad Dave made it to safety and his home is still standing. Not a very
defensible area.

Steve and Dave, any word on what may have started that fire? Its looking like it might be one of the biggest of all time. Already makes oür Station fire look like a run of the mill brush fire and that thing burned for over a month!

There is absolutely no doubt that this fire was started by illegal
immigrants. We go through this year round but this time the conditions were
ripe for disaster. The start fires to cook or keep warm, then walk away
from them because they need their water for themselves.
With nearly all the vegetation destroyed, it will be a lot easier to track
them now. Unfortunately, when their spotters return to the mtn tops, they
will also have an easier time spotting the BP agents.
