Hi Folks,

I have got to tell you as a group, I'm impressed with the level of assistance. I'm not entirely mechanically challenged, I've built several Experimental airplanes over the years and a couple of 38' sailboat. But motors are not my thing. However, here is what I can do to help others in the group. First, I'll tell you why I do what I do. Forty Six years ago I joined the Marine Corps straight out of high school. All I wanted to do was be a metal smith and work on helicopters. I ended up as an air traffic controller who for 350 combat missions stood behind a .50 Cal machine gun while flying as a door gunner in Viet Nam. Then my boss said guess what, your going to be a Drill Instructor. Finally I got to be an air traffic controller for the last 12 of a 24 year career. Then I managed a large General Aviation Airport in southern California and finally owned a Fixed Base Operation. When I retired, I finally got to be a metal smith!

I live in southern California have a great home based metal shop. It's just like everyone else's home shop. I have a large CNC plasma cutting table, a 4 axis CNC rotary table, (36" X 60") a standard mill and lathe, a complete sand blasting and powder coating suite along with a large oven. Additionally, I've got metal brakes and presses and an english wheel, power beading machine and shrinker/strecher. This is my home hobby shop and weather vane central. Since you also have to be able to stick this metal together, I have Gas, Arc, MIG and TIG welding capabilities. So If you are in the socal area and need some help in these areas, come on by. But...bring parts not a motorhome. I live on a hill and I do mean a hill. The driveway is 500' long and about 75' of elevation change. Turning my 26' GMC Avion around is a 15 minute job. Mostly I build aircraft weather vanes for folks. I also build aircraft ribs and parts for experimental aircraft builders and cut and bend 4
130 steel parts for aircraft projects. I will on occasion do some louvers in sheet metal for this or that type of a project. I may not be great at fixing mechanical things like motors, but I can program a CNC cutter and cut wood, aluminum and steel. So If I can help, call upon me. All I ask is bring your own stock and I'll se what I can do to make what you need.

So 46 years after joining the Marine Corps, I now get to live my Water Mitty dream and be a metal smith!
