I have been off of the forum for a while and am now trying to get my coach on the road. One problem I have is that the dash air box draws air from inside the engine bay instead of drawing from outside air. I am wondering if anyone has made an add on vent which would attach to the air box and go to a fresh air vent? My wife says she will not go anywhere in it if I can't get rid of "that smell". I have searched the pictures and found air box mods but nothing like I am talking about. Any help out there?? Thanks!

Thanks for the replies. I had not seen the page on hot and cold. This explains why there is a hole in the dash. I think a PO started the recirculation mod and never finished it. Now maybe I can get rid of the engine bay smell coming through the vents.

Since we don't have true cowl vents like a car, the intake is up sort of under the hoods, more actually on centre. I guess the theory was to grab outside air from behind the grill. This works well while moving but if you have fuel, oil or fume leaks you will get some smells standing still. I would as Jim K suggests find the cause of the problem leak causing the smell. For me I like the 'as designed' fresh air coming in as it creates positve pressure in the coach and stops drafts and leaks (or turns them into outflow leaks) and as it brings in fresh air the windows don't steam up. You also change out the air in the coach and eliminate negative pressure and bathroom smells, monoxide etc. I only use recirc when it's extremely hot and then for a short time. Most owners manuals state not to leave the controls in recic as a continous practice. I know on newer Mercedes it times out after a while and reverts to fresh.

As far as I can tell this is not a fuel leak/exhaust leak thing. It is just the smell of a hot engine. Not hot as in overheated just one that has been running. It does not seem to be a problem until you stop the coach and there is no more fresh air being driven through the grille. Just smells like a good old carb using internal combustion engine. My British cars have sort of the same smell.

Don,
If your engine hatch seal isn't in good shape, that's a much more
likely source of the engine smell. Then there's the vertical gap at
each end of the firewall (under the hoods) which is unsealed in a lot
of coaches. Add in the "chipmunk cheeks" at the sides, over the front
wheels, where the coach sides are separated from the cockpit floor,
and you've got LOTS more air leakage than the little fresh air vent
could take in. And any air coming in the fresh air vent without the
fan operating is not likely to make it through the labyrinthine
ductwork very quickly -- it's hard pressed to get through with high
blower.
Make sure the hatch seal is good.

I replaced the hatch seal when I got the coach as I figured it was the cause. The only place I can detect any o'de engine is through the dash vents and that is wen sitting still. I am going to go over as much as I can on the seams to see if anything is coming in that way. Thanks for all suggestions, keep 'em coming!

After I wrote that post, it occurred to me that I no longer have anyone
riding in the co-pilots seat except Mary's dog, and she never complains if
it is too hot or too cold. She is just a happy camper to be going down the
road. Damn those memories, anyhow.

Rob, believe me, I do cherish them. I just can't control them, and they
flood over my awake thoughts and take precedence. Then I am emotionally
impacted (crying) when I have no control or strength to deal with them. That
is the "damn" part. The wounds are fresh and unhealed, all the busy activity
helps a great deal as do all my family, friends, and the GMC Community for
sure. I have two tasks remaining to be done one is to deal with her ashes, a
burial at sea, and to hold those accountable for her botched surgery that
untimately resulted in her death. I am really pissed about that and it won't
rest until it is resolved. Thanks for being there and listening and for the
kind words of encouragement.

Tincture of time is the only medicine which helps. Eventually the good memoies begin to outweigh the bad ones.

When we were in Florida a couple of weeks ago I picked up some new wheels and tires at Jim Bounds and asked him about my problem with dash air venting. He knew exactly what I was talking about with residual hot engine smells coming through the dash vents. It just comes down to the fact that the ac air is pulled through the engine bay instead of from outside air via a cowl vent or something like it. He suggested tying the ac box to the plastic air box on the passenger side and letting it recirculate the air in the coach. I will figure something out, just have to keep digging. I was wondering if anyone had ever moved the blower to another location for fresh air and piped the fresh air into the air box? Probably more trouble than it is worth but I am just wondering.
