Hopefully the beginning of the end if something dumber doesn't come along.

But..... reading the whole thing says the EPA requirements are still
in force. Still a way to go.

Yes, but some states have their OWN ethanol mandates.
However, if the ethanol is not subsidized by $ .45
per gallon, the price of E10 will rise to the point
where it is economically unviable and thus unsalable.

If/when Coloradans start having to pay
an added 50 cents per gallon and start
raising hell with their legislators,
just watch that state mandate disappear!

A recent editorial in the DENVER POST stated that the US Senate voted overwhelmingly to stop the ethanol subsidy. While it may not happen this time the subsidy will not be renewed when it comes up for renewal in the near future. Watch the lobbyists scramble.
BTW: the corn raised on my farm goes to feed chickens in the Carolinas.

G'day,

While it doesn't relate directly to this subject there was a news article
last night that up in Queensland the sugar cane growers are squeezing the
juice out of the cane and then grinding it up to use to power their plants.
It turns out that they have so much of the cane that they're building a
power plant to sell power back to the grid. The will be able to supply
enough power from one plant to power 300 houses!

A recent editorial in the DENVER POST stated that the US Senate voted
overwhelmingly to stop the ethanol subsidy. While it may not happen this
time the subsidy will not be renewed when it comes up for renewal in the
near future. Watch the lobbyists scramble.
BTW: the corn raised on my farm goes to feed chickens in the Carolinas.

Howdy;

For those not familiar with ethanol production and the thinking that the corn is wasted for production of ethanol, and there will be an acute food shortage by using corn for this purpose, here is some short facts about DDG. The local feedlots in my area take the DDG wet, or what we call 'mash'. It will keep for several weeks, both winter and summer, and is like candy to the livestock. In 2010, one farmer fed 131 people, and the claim that the corn producers gets the ethanol subsidy is false. Ethanol is blended by the FUEL producers, as demanded by the US Gov, and THEY recieve the subsidy.

Distillers Grain

Distillers grain is an important co-product of drymill ethanol production. Drymill ethanol production process uses only the starch portion of the corn, which is about 70% of the kernel. All the remaining nutrients - protein, fat, minerals, and vitamins - are concentrated into distillers grain, a valuable feed for livestock. A bushel of corn weighs 56 pounds and will produce at least 2.8 gallons of ethanol and 17 pounds of distillers grain.

Distillers grain can be fed to livestock wet or dry. Dried distillers grain (DDG) is the most common variety. Drying the distillers grain increases its shelf life and improves its ability to be transported over longer distances. If a consistent nearby market can be secured, ethanol producers can supply the feed as wet distillers grain (WDG). The wet form is not as easily transportable, but the cost of drying the product is removed.

Dried distillers grain with solubles (DDGS) is the form available to the feed industry. The liquid that is separated from the mash during the distilling process is partially dehydrated into a syrup, then added back onto the dried distillers grain to create DDGS.

DDGS is a high quality feedstuff ration for dairy cattle, beef cattle, swine, poultry, and aquaculture. The feed is an economical partial replacement for corn, soybean meal, and dicalcium phosphate in livestock and poultry feeds. Historically, over 85% of DDGS has been fed to dairy and beef cattle, and DDGS continues to be an excellent, economical feed ingredient for use in ruminant diets.

Bob,

It's really nice to hear "just the facts."

Hey, the penny just dropped when you mentioned "mash" I realized that
ethanol is what gets distilled into booze! What a dope!

When I was working in the lab at Hamilton Standard Space Systems Department
we had a 55 gallon drum of the stuff to use for testing purposes. I remember
seeing a big ATF tax stamp on it. They had it out where people could get to
it easily UNTIL management realized the rate of consumption didn't match the
rate used for testing purposes! They then locked it up and you had to have a
test procedure that authorized you to get it.
