Does this mean you never intend to move the tires around? Interesting. What
are you going to do about a spare?

I don't see why it would not work. The front does all of the pulling and most of the stopping.

Brian,

You noted: "I am thinking of using 4 smoothies on the back and the all season or next more agressive tread on the front"

I don't understand why you would want to do that?

Do you REALLY want to fishtail and swap ends
when you attempt to stop on wet pavement?

Guys, I don't think he means slicks, just using the smoother tread to get a softer ride. Also, several owners on the forum have mentioned they do not rotate the tires since they expire before they wear out.
Brian, your approach makes sense to me. Keep one older tire for a spare.

Brian,
What advantage do you gain by doing this? IMHO I can see no real
value in doing this. Their won't be any real change in ride or noise.

Mac,
Smoothie means standard highway tread. Maybe all season tread on the
front. Probably a good combo but eliminates rotation and could keep the
spare out of rotation.

and if you have a flat or road debris on one of the front's (especially right) make sure you dont drive on wet grass,etc..
This will mismatch your drive pattern/traction for the fronts.
There's logic for both ways..

Unless you have a reaction arm braking system. Then she hunkers down in the rear and squats. Quite a nice feeling once you get used to it.

That is what I have done for years:

M&S on front for better traction.

Highway tread on back for low rolling resistance, minimum noise.

The only reason to rotate is for uneven tread wear (fix it):

Rotate rears, same side if required.

Wear not likely to be a problem since they will likely age out before wear out.

Mismatch of treads with the spare of little/no concern:
Spare should have same tread as fronts; no concern with front driving/braking/steering tires. On the rear mixed with the other 3 wheels, who would know?

Works for me

Brian,

Thanks, I NEVER would have figgered that out! ;-)

My GMC has Kumho KL-78 AT tires all around, and I didn't see the point in
having a mis-match. They are not noisy and the ride is smooth.
