1978 GMC popped up on Craig's List in the D.C. area.
Do not know anything about the coach, other than the owner apparently does not either. Listed as a "P3500".
Anyone interested in the coach, I'll go look at it for them. Not far from me.

Yes Tom, when/if you have time, I'm interested.
Side or rear bath? rear dinette or permanant bed?
403? miles? awning? manuals? condiiton?

I wonder if this is a dealer, "P3500 and all aluminum body"
Thanks very much.
Don in Dallas, TX. Maybe I'll do a reverse of your trip! But there is no way this coach is in as good shape as your new one.

Side bath (might be a dry one!)
Dual AC, 16.5 steel wheels
Can't make out the engine from this view but I'm pretty sure there's manuals by the way it's sitting. Laughing

I agree.

Normally when a coach doesn't have the "galley" window, mid-ship on the driver's side AND the rear window in the "normal" place above the generator door... it is a twin dry bath. Looking closely at the lower side, it looks like it has a refer door and water heater... most likely making it a Royale.

In 1978, Royales came in 4 flavors. <http://www.bdub.net/publications/1978_GMC_by_Coachman/1978_GMC_Coachman.htm>

It is not a rear bath. so that leaves 3 flavors. Most likely it is a twin or rear U-Dinette. (both nice) It COULD also be a center kitchen. (Can not tell from the driver's side) If so... a very NICE layout... lots of room, dry bath... a little lacking in storage. This is the layout replicated by Clasco. (sort of...) <http://www.bdub.net/publications/Clasco/clasco_twin_bed_flyer.html>

By the windows, I'd say it's a Royale or other transmode.

Funny listing. Whoever put it up doesn't know what they have. For instance;
P3500. That doesn't begin to look like a P chassis. It also says the
bathroom is loaded.

Serious question: Did the dry side bath models GMC finished have only two
windows on the side? I believe so. But, since it's a 1978 with windows like
I'll wager its a center kitchen Royale. It looks like there's only the
furnace on the passenger side. Paint strip looks like it was a weak
replication of the Coachmen style.

Yes, IIRC, the twin bed, dry side bath GM up-fitted coaches did NOT have the small "galley" window on the driver's side. but the water heater is still electric and the refer is still on the curb side.

I could be wrong, but to me, it looks like this coach has a furnace, water heater and refer vents under the belt-line on the driver's side. I am fairly sure it will turn out to be a Royale... a rear twin or rear U-Dinette... but could be a CK (center Kitchen). (That is 3 of the 4 types made that year....) I will wait until someone sees the other side or interior.

Definitely a Royale..........furnace is in the right location as well as the
refrigerator vent.

I enlarged the picture and it looks like the model that has the kitchen sink
behind the drivers seat, looks like a faucet sticking up. I also cannot see the
center kitchen window which would normally be just to the right of the door
window when looking at it from the inside.

Coach is 1978 GMC Royale, by Coachman. Center kitchen, side dry bath, rear u-shaped dinette. Speedo shows probable 114k miles. Paint is very good, interior is in great shape, except for the carpet. Tires are 16.5, with date codes from 2004. Did not test any appliances, but even had the blender. Engine looked very clean. Did not see any major leak spots under coach. Gen set is newer Onan Emerald 5000. Had 3 batteries installed, looked good, but probably from 2005 ( just a guess). Has original GMC manuals, and receipts ( dating from 2004/5 era). Has 2 A/C's, storage pod, and roof ladder.
PM me with phone number for more personal impressions. I would not hesitate to fly here, and drive this baby home. Tires might be my main hangup. Car lot/mechanic has done most of the work on it, and he has a great deal of confidence in it.
Price seems very fair, even in this depressed market. Too bad that I did not see this one. Very pretty coach. Add Eagles and new tires and off you go.

Tom,

Thanks for the eye-ball. Even though I am not in the market... others are. (like I really need another coach!)

Just wondering... Center kitchen and Rear u-shaped dinette are two very different models. Is the kitchen just behind the driver (Rear u-shaped dinette) or just aft of the entrance door (Center kitchen) ???

I may be mistaken on center kitchen layout. Entering the coach, the frig is across from the door. The dry bath is to the left of the frig, and the kitchen to the right. The kitchen extends to the back of the driver's seat.
Hope this helps.

That makes it a "Rear U-Dinette" ... I believe it has the largest bed of all the GMC's, but other than that, is very similar to the rear twin Royale.

From the outside on the curb side, a Center Kitchen is easy to spot. It has a galley window right next to and aft of the entrance door. I think it is the only 26 foot layout to have a window there.

Either way, it is a good layout... just different.
