Hello,

My wife always complains how dark the interior is from the stove/refrigerator and back (she has a point). What paint can be used on those flat surfaces & will stick & is spraying the best way to apply??

Doesn't the home improvement places (lowes home depot et al) have
refacing panels one could use to "reface" panels

I think that would look better then trying to paint them. Some paints
just wont look right and may just "streak" (opinion)

I took a door from my 76 Eleganza with the dark vinyl covered cabinets to Sherwin-Williams. The answer he gave me is to use their bonding primer which is about $48 gallon and then use any good quality paint.

William,
I have not painted the cabinets yet. I'm doing a serious house kitchen remodel so the coach cosmetic projects will be on hold for a few months. The coach that Jim and Marlys Garman bought from Steve Ferguson has painted cabinets in the hall, I assume Steve painted the cabinets. They are a nice light cream or tan and it looks great and sure changes the feeling of the hallway. If you have the dark walnut cabinets it is a good change in my opinion.

I've done a lot of painting, however, generally with a brush. What is the prep work ?? Do you need to "rough it up or prep it with a "primer" to have it "bind" to the hard/slick surface ?? Does Krylon "run" easily?? I'm a novice at spraying. Any advice is appreciated.

Practice on your friends motorhome first

Sorry, spray can work is easy if what you are spraying is CLEAN. If there is a stain or finish on the panels I would wash all of them with tsp(home depot) then scuff with red scotch brite then dust a few coats of Kilz spray on in order to stabilize the wood. Let the kilz dry thoroughly and sweep any dust/raised grain out of the dried kilz again with red scotch brite and apply your top coat(you'll be an expert after playing around with the kilz) once you have a decent light "grabber" coat you can spray a little heavier for texture and coverage. If you live in cold climate such as myself fill the laundry sink with hot water and put the paint cans in there. Pull one out after a few minutes and shake it. If you feel the can go cold in your hand while shaking, drop it in the water again and repeat. Paint likes to be warm. Don't get the can any closer than about 12 inches. Better to apply from further with more overlap of passes.

I might be over offering here but I thought of a couple of other things. Keep a rag handy to wipe the drool off of the spray tip as when it finally grows big enough to fall off it can get thrown by the spray into your paint work. Keep some lacquer thinner and rags handy. If you flag it bad with a herd of runs you can wipe em off while wet with a thinner soaked rag(s) and when the thinner gasses off, try again

On the subject of doors and panels, i want to redo all the wallmounted doors and cabinets in our GMC. I have experimented a little by taking one 2 door unit that sat above a window apart. Finding what seemed to be some sort of vinyl coating on wood "wood effect", and a cream vinyl. Using a heat gun "carefully" and a scraper it was possible to remove the old imitation vinyl finish totally. I am then going to spray with a filler primer, and sand flat to make the old frame nice and smooth and then spray it with matt enamel paint. I did this with some kitchen cabinets and if done carefully looks very nice.
NB this idea comes with no warranty !!!!

I had seen that, however, I do not know how he did it. My wife has not grown to like the GMC as she feels too confined. I'm afraid that it will require more that the big hall light. But a lighter look to the wood would help.

I painted all the "woodwork" in my coach. I pulled the drawers and doors, wiped with laquer, lightly sanded, wiped with laquer again. I brushed on a primer (Kilz oil based I think) and rolled the flat surfaces with a foam roller. I than brushed and rolled on a Sherwin Williams satin latex enamel. No problem with runs and it looks darn good and sure brightens up the interior. Sorry no pictures. Go for it! You and SHE will be happy.

Wow, now that is what I can do. Oil based Kilz comes with strong fumes!! I have used it many many times. Much better than the water-based.

Since it is "vinyl" woodgrain on most of them I wonder if SEM paint
would work well? Sure sticks to the dash and the ABS side panels
really well. I've used it on vinyl door panels and even my knee rubbing
on the door panel hasn't worn the SEM off in 5 years.

Just about to embark on this project myself. After much research, the best local solution I found was the Kilz 123 primer and a company named Graham Paints out of IL. makes a ceramic paint that is basically indistructable. Even in a satin finish in white, everything wipes off of it, staines even magic markers wipes off with a wet rag. I tryed it on a sample piece of laminate that came off of one of the cabinets. I did every thing but beat it with a hammer, even scratching does not phase it. I also found a couple of companies that sell similar products, some requiring primer, and some that don't. Sanding will only enhance the ability of the paint or primer to grab the slippery laminate surface. I intend to use fiberglass body filler to repair any damaged areas before priming. My previous owner, who makes harps for a living made beautiful handmade oak doors and put in a parquet floor and the dark fake wood just does not add anything to the coach. It is our belief that the lighter colors, especially through the hall of the palm beach will make it seem more open. At least that was my feeling when doing the open house tours of a few painted coaches in DuQuion. Anyway, it would be tough to go back once you do it, but imho, I think is a great upgrade with minimal expense.

Alos I intend to add some protective srips to anywhere that is a serious rubbing problem, such as the latch of the bathroom door when open slides on the cabinet door face. It may hold up to this, but why take the chance.

Since it is "vinyl" woodgrain on most of them I wonder if SEM paint
would work well?   Sure sticks to the dash and the ABS side panels
really well.  I've used it on vinyl door panels and even my knee rubbing
on the door panel hasn't worn the SEM off in 5 years.
